Was he going for a similar look to the early metal-panel Marshalls? Marshalls don't seem to have similar wear patterns though.

"Dimple Back" CTS 1M and 500K audio taper pots seem to lack the dead spot.

I think the crappy taper on the regular CTS pots is due to the option for a concentric on-off switch.
