Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
The amp is finally done and I fired it up yesterday. It was running way hot, so I had to increase the cathode resistors from 120 ohm to 147 ohms.
The amp settled at 75% plate dissipation. It cleaned up considerably, but I guess I could go even higher on the cathode resistors. The added cathode resistors looks like a hack job, so I'll order some new 10W and redo the bias board.
I'm running 12AX7's in V1 & V2 and a 5751 in V3. I might install a 12AX7 in V3 and drop the signal before the PI instead. I want the amp to have a high headroom. I have some JJ EL84's in there now. What EL84 tubes do you guys recommend? I have some NOS 12AX7 Mullards that I'll try out in the preamp.
I have to rewire the cut control, because it's now a presence control.
The amp is silent with very little hiss and no hum. I haven't added a shielding plate for the chassis, but I guess it might be a good idea for live use.
Clips will follow.

Well? How does it sound with all that high-class kit crammed in that little purple hole?
It looks fantastic!

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Well, it sounds nice. I can not dial in a harsh sound on this amp. It's smooth.
I've only played it through my 4X12 loaded with WareHouse ET-65's (G12-65 clones), but the plan is to get a cab built loaded with either blues or golds. Not sure which ones to get yet.
I'll post some clips so you can hear how it sounds like.
Thanks
Joakim

I am dying to hear those caps with those resistors in that amp! Good deal!
I just remembered I was supposed to upload some clips... oops.

Joakim, this is a very beautiful build.
Regarding the EL84s, I have not tried any modern valves but recently I found that I rather liked how those old Telam EL84s react. There's a guy in Poland who sells Telam pairs in cigarette packets. TFKs pressed my button too. Right now I have a mix of both in there.
The pre amp is Mullard, Mazda and TFK, I think in that order - but I don't really remember.
Enjoy your Rocket!
Best, tony

I don't think I've heard about Telam before, but I'll check them out.
Thanks

Re: Rocket in progress (Clip added)
I was supposed to post a clip of the amp, but never got a chance to record one. Had the mike up today and did some poodle noodling
Sorry for the cheesy stuff, but at least you'll hear how it sounds
Thanks

I agree rev. Not Jeff's tone, but the clip had a Beckish feel to it. I was impressed.RevD wrote:Man that sounded great! Had a Beckish feel on the whammy, very cool man!

Joakim
Lovely playing and that amp sounds killer
Re el84's I really like the ballsyness and (what I perceive as) added headroom from 6p14N's
They're rugged russian military tubes on ebay and plenty cheap
