New EL34 rocket...

Post by tubedogsmith »

Here's a 4 EL34 Rocket style amp I just finished with a speaker cab. I had some transformers wound just for this and it all came out great. It is really nice sounding. Lot of fun to play.

It's very smooth and tight sounding. Lots of thump. Between working the master and the half power switch you can get a whole range of the same type sounds at vastly different volume levels. It came out with a lot more going on than I anticipated.

Cathode bias, no NFB setup?

basically like an ac100. I have a drake type OT (1202-132) lying around and am tempted to build one myself

Really a great looking build, all around! Great looking layout. Love the cabinets too (wow).

What PT did you settle on? I think I see the bias set to 150R/220uF(?) per pair? Did you try to mimic the 120% bias condition for the AC30? or something a little more conservative.

Thanks. It's not biased real hot and plate voltage is just 370Vdc. 6L6's sound real nice in it as well.
Yes, it's cathode bias, no nfb.

So about 17W per tube. Sweet. So is your PT running about 300 or 310VAC through two GZ34s?

And blondes are more fun...
So are brunettes, redheads and (amps) with black hair.
The worst one you ever played with was pretty good right?
Otherwise it's you're instrument or technique....

I want to build one like that myself. I have a 1k7 OT and need a 100w PT. Triode has a plexi PT for around 70usd that should work for an ac100. Do you feel the chassis works well for a 4xel34 amp or do you recommend something bigger? I'd prefer keeping the PT and OT apart to avoid hum
