Traynor Wreck

Post by lpd »

Hello,
I just finished a build with the help of a friend converting a Traynor Voicemaster to a Trainwreck circuit. Primary on the OPT was 5.2K which I figured would be close enough to use (and apparently was used in Liverpools and possibly Express amps).

This amp is amazing!! Roll back the volume on my guitar and I have a textured clean with lots of detail and easily affected by pick attack. Roll up the volume and all hell breaks loose. Lots of gain, nice smooth distortion with lots of feedback if desired. No noise issues, just a loud, can I say very loud amplifier.

Anyone try a power soak on one of these amps? Any thoughts on speakers/cabs?

I've got one of those I've considered trying to convert to resemble either an SLO Clone or a Komet Concorde. They're great mod platforms - you've already got several extra preamp tube sockets, lots of room, and great iron. Maybe someday I'll get around to it. Congrats on your nice amp!
Let that boy boogie woogie.

Look for notes regarding "Air Brake".

Welcome.

Sorry it's an Express A1b. I'm amazed at how great this circuit sounds. Just a tad loud :)

WOW...

I was thinking about turning my traynor ygm3 into a 2 el84 liverpoolish thing, but got a bunch of grief from bandmates about messing with it.. the traynor only barely works and seems to have spent a lot of it's life in a shed. (wasp nests and rusted sockets when I got it) ..I have done a lot of work on it, but every problem I repair brings a new one to light. I am getting tired of messing with it.

I know that the trainwrecks don't do well in combos, but does anyone have any thoughts about a half powered liverpool combo? closed back cab in the ygm3 and the iron is in good condition.

From what I understand. If you dress correctly and dampen the chassis ect for vibrations you may get away with it but due to the high gain design of the amp it may oscillate ect in a combo.

I currently have my chassis sitting on a 212 cab not mounted in the cab and no issues with vibrations ect.

I have learned that tube placement is critical in this amp as I tried a few Mullard 12AX7s I the amp but wasn't getting much clean with the guitar volume lowered until I rolled the tubes around. Not sure which is more critical PI or first as those are the two I swapped but once I switched I have twice the clean tone. I'm sure I can tweak some more but right now I am listening and adapting to the amp.
