Weber copper Cap In Rocket

Post by njwrecks »

Just to share some info- rocket build with R'sJ Edcor 245V PT
with Sovtek AR4 - 284v on plates
with Weber copper cap (soild state simulation ) GZ34 - 278v on plates
seems to work and sound fine- not too hot etc...
Anyone else use a copper cap?
the perfect bar amp with the lower voltages....they don't want things too loud nowadays..

I didn't use the copper cap but did go with SS recto in my Twin Tube Rocket and Rockster build.
And used a 280-0-280 PT ala Mark Fowler. Both sound nice with the Rocket very jangly 60's sounding and the Rockster a real lead guitar amp. Wow...
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

I use something similar - I needed a bridge rectifier (I was converting another amp and didn't have the tube option), so I have the module that mounts to the chassis, rather than a plug-in. Seems to work fine.

I used to use a CopperCap but changed direction. As far as I know, it is just some diodes in a unique package, right? However, one day I actually heard that it was putting some kind of weird sonic artifact into the amp. ? I know this seems impossible but I could replace it with a tube rectifier and the noise would go away, put it back in and the noise would return. So I tossed it. It was with a Silvertone amp that I used to own. Eh, maybe there was something unique about the amp but, in any case, I avoid 'odd' sounds and anything that contributes to them - so that was it for me and the Weber CC.

Currently I run high voltage/amperage diodes prior to my rectifiers, whether 5Y3, 5U4, or 5AR4. This comes from an article by David Funk called 'Bombproofing Your Rectifier Tube' or something to that effect.

Rooster, I had the same problem in my Rocket build - i opted for a SS recto plug in the beginning, but had those weird problems, so swapped in a proper tube and it went away.

thanks so much for the replies guys- all the best to you

I did install a GE 5V4 -it's running 270V on the plates- noticeably softer sounding with the Edcor 245 PT- then again I'm playing the quiet gigs
