which El84's for rocket build? uk

Post by norburybrook »

Going to build a rocket/Z-wreck next.

What new EL84's would you recommend from;

1; JJ
2: EH
3: Sovtek
4: Tung sol

Or Tube town's own brand?

Cheers

Hiya. I had sovteks in mine and didn't like them much, I now have Mullard reissues, they were about the same price and sound great, not as harsh sounding as the sovteks in my 2 hole rocket......but everyone has different ears.
Good luck....

A lotta good reports on JJ EL84's. I've used them and I think they sound good.

Out of the 4 brands you listed, JJ's for sure...I also like the standard grade 6P14P, I'm pretty sure that Z-Wrecks come with the mil-spec version of those, the 6P14P-EV.
First 25 years of playing, I never got along with EL84's...Now I think, WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH ME????

Thanks guys. I've used JJ's on my 2 Dumble builds and they've been fine so I was heading towards them anyway.

Would you recommend them for the pre amp/PI as well?

If I had to pick a brand without auditioning the tubes first, i'd bet on EH. They seem to have the best combination of low noise and tone quality, which is mostly about brightness in my experience. JJ's are good, and I've had good results from the Mullard and Tung-Sol reissues. I haven't tried any TAD's yet, but I'm interested in hearing some of those.

Thanks Martin, I'll give them a go. Just in the process of acquiring parts at the moment. guitar Mike here on the forum runs Modulus amps here in the UK and has been very helpful in getting it all together, he's just got the transformer set made so we're nearly good to go.

I finish touring first week of October so will hopefully get everything together soon after.

I always liked 7189A, but they awfully rare and spendy. If you ever find a set that's not too dear, it might be worth having. Pinout is a bit different.

the military ones are 3x the price of a JJ or regular Sovtek.

Just to be clear where talking about these tubes 6n14n k I believe these are sovtecs, not possitive though. I do buy large batches of them there less than 5$ a tube.

25.3 euro each so nearly $30 a piece!

JJ and regular Sovtek are $10

They are much cheaper than that on eBay. Typically $5-7 each for the non Millitary grade, and probably $6-10 for Millitary grade.

Since I am not using my amps as a weapon, I buy the non Millitary grade, and they sound great.
