Tonic Vapour Photos

Post by dartanion »

Hey Guys,

I thought I'd share a couple of photos of Vapour #001. There are a couple of small changes I am going to make, but those are minor.

Nice . I like the layout and graphics on the face of the chassis. I noticed the 6V6 power tubes. How many watts are you getting? How does the "Vapour" sound?

It's about 20W output.

Here's a quick video from the LA Amp Show:

The PG guys are very cool and I appreciate them doing the videos. The sound quality is ok, but could be much better. I will be making some new clips once I get some time. I've got a bunch of builds to finish first.

Very nice construction. It is almost too beautiful to use.. Lauout very neat and clean. Good workmanship. What are the differences or rather how much different is this from a Wreck? Can we give you the ultimate compliment...(clone your design)?

Not being negative in anyway!!!! It's a very clean build. I'm wondering how does it differ from a TW? outside of cosmetics and capacitor style choice? You said you debuted it at the LA amp show, are you planning on mass producing them?

Very nice Dart. I too hate the KF power supply board. Like you I took the totem pole string off the board but have also moved the 1K screen dropping resistor under the PS board. I'm still using fixed bias and raising the filaments 35VDC so it looks a lot different but like yours also manages space more effectively.

I'm tempted to go to a PC and mount all the components stand up/top lead bent over. Still put the 1K/25W underneath and go to can caps like you have. The problem with the KF board is the time. It's just a tedious SOB with all those little jumpers and fiddly bits. The main board goes together so much more logically and is easier to make changes on.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the compliments. The Vapour is a production amp, however there is no such thing as "mass production" when I build these from scratch.

I changed the circuit somewhat (mostly in the PS and PA), but not too far astray from a Wreck. The smaller board has the recto diodes and cathode bias resistors + caps. Signal cap choice came on a whim and I really like the results. It does the Wreck clean to mean thing quite well and sings like a bird. No problem getting controlled feedback either. The problem with this amp is that it sounds so MEAN  that it's just too much fun to play clean!!

Not sure what was deleted in the above post, but feel free to critique my work. I'm not averse to constructive criticism.

The cab photos aren't great. I need to take some good naturally lit shots. The handle has chrome ends that reflected the tolex, so that's just an illusion.
