Scumback speakers

Post by tejastubes »

I had ordered 4 M75 25 watt 16 ohm Scumback speakers from Jim at Southbay but due to hurricane Ike and other events never got to put them in my 4x12.

Well I finally did the other day (4 months later) and WOW! I can say they were worth every penny. Amazing vintage tone and the top end is nice and relaxed,,,very sweet,,,and I can finally use the bridge pick up on my guitar! My express sounds amazing with those speakers.

Additionally, I put them in myself (with a little tech assistance from Jim) and only took me an hour. :D

I love my Scumback speakers; H75s for me.

Jim did a ton of research; owned and had access to dozens of period speakers. Weber came through on the builds.

I put a Scumback H75 into one of my 6v6 combos and it is Killer. After breakin as per Jim, (I did use 2 washes of acetone though) It sounds spectacular. Highly Recommended.

There's a whole page of M75 clips on my site here: http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/clips/m_clips.html

Here's one that Pete Thorn of the Chris Cornell band did with an M75 65 watt about three weeks ago. He's using three different Dave Friedman (Rack Systems) amp mods installed on a Marshall Plexi reissue, IIRC.

Jim,

They sound amazing right out of the box.

What are the typical "break in" times for the M-75, H75 different wattages etc? I can't imagine it getting any better as they were so vastly superior to what I was used to hearing coming out of that cabinet, it really took me by surprise.

Joshua,
Variac break in times are as follows:

Speaker
Imp Power Rating Break in Voltage How Long?
8___________ 65____________13.165____________2 to 3 hours - light break in
8___________ 30 ____________ 8.9
16___________65 ___________ 18.61 ____________8-12 hours - medium
16__________ 30 ___________ 12.64
8 __________ 100 ___________ 16.325 ____________20 to 25 - full break inl
16 __________100 ___________ 23.094

I usually limit the break in to 8 hours per session so the speaker doesn't overheat.

This formula is for the Scumbacks only.

Scumback break in with an amp at gig volumes is around 20-25 hours for a 30 watt, 40-50 hours for a 65 watt, 60-70 for a 100 watt version.
