I was finally able to record some clips of my recent rocket build. I am not a guitar slinger; so these clips are simply rhythm-type tracks. I wish I could solo and rule the world; but darn, I just keep coming up with cliché pentatonic riffs. In any case, three of the clips were recorded dry, with only a touch of verb to capture to ambience of the room. On the last clip I added a delay simply to show how I’d actually use the amp in a real setting.
Guitars:
Suhr Classic T
Gretsch Reverend Horton Heat
Those are beautiful!
I must say, the charcter of the amp really comes through in all the clips.
I like the fact that you get that tone with pretty neutral tonestack settings. There is a smoothness there. -You get the sparkly cleans, but the edge is off the treble.
Thus far my amp behaves similarly although I have added a mid pot
These clips have also educated me as I believe yours is an el84 standard rocket as opposed to my 6L6 adventure. So the differences are definitely there- but hard to describe.
Thanks Pete and Mark! The amp is a ton of fun to play. One item that is contributing to the tone, and something I forgot to mention earlier, is that I used a 2x12 closed-back cab loaded with newly purchased Scumback M75's - 65 watters. Great speakers; and very musical. There is really no comparison to how superior they sound against the celestion reissue greenbacks they replaced!
Mark, I would would think that your 6L6 version would have a lower mid thump when you start to crank it - somewhat similar to an express. You think?

Exactly!
The strange thing is this: at clean volumes I have to be careful with Mids and bass. In a small room they can be "boomy" but all is well in a larger setting. Still, I am frugal with the bass settings and my bass is often at less than 9o'clock when playing clean.
Crancked it another story. I can easily place the Mid knob on 3o'clock and up the bass too. The "thump" is fantastic!; and it does not mush out at all. It just compresses a bit and - well- you know the rest...........
This is why I can't wait for the KT66's that Zippy promised me.
But ever since I made the offer to break them in for him he doesn't call, he doesn't write, so may be I will have to buy my own
Rawn, those are great! They really capture the nature of a Rocket. I've heard some higher gain clips of rocket builds and they don't sound anything like the Rockets I've heard.

Sounds great!!!!!
Thanks Allyn! I really have no idea what an authentically made KF Rocket sounds like. I was hoping I was getting close with this build. Having a positive response from you, one who's heard and worked on the real deal, means a lot. Thanks!
