Capacitor Issues with Rocket build

Post by CapnCrunch »

Hey all....

I am working on getting all the parts together for a Rocket. I have most of them but am wondering about some of the capacitors in the BOM. Specifically Caps 2,3,6,7,9,10, and 12. I've searched Mouser, Allied, and Digikey. These Cornell Dublier caps show as obsolete at Mouser, and just show out of stock at Allied.

Are these obtainable or should I look for alternatives? If so, what alternatives are recommended?

Try this search engine.

http://octopart.com/

You should be able to find sources for most parts but be aware of shipping charges up front.
You might ask Allyn if he has any of the parts in stock?

I ran into the same situation looking for Rocket parts myself. I just called Cornell to sort out if their part numbers are obsolete and they said no, they were still active. They do show stock of the PVC6122 at their New Bedford facility (900 pieces). I'm not sure why Mouser is showing them as obsolete.

Anyway, Tom's tip for octopart.com is great (Thanks Tom). Newark has the PVCxxxx caps.

Thetubestore.com has all the caps you need

turretboards.com also has caps and parts

metroamps.com has large watt resistors and caps

mojotone.com has caps and parts

tubesandmore.com has many caps and parts

triodestore.com tubes, caps other parts

Apex jr for bourns pots

I seldom use mouser or allied anymore.

DBlittle.com has rubber feet, cab corners and flightcase building supplies

So, here's probably a stupid question. Are all mica caps created equal? For instance, are the "silver mica" caps that you find from the various suppliers above, the same type of cap as the CDE mica caps? I've found the poly film caps but still can't locate all of the mica caps in the BOM. I can substitute orange drops or other generic silver mica's. I'm just wondering how much that will effect the amp.

Couldn't seem to find any of the CDE PVC-series caps (PVC601, PVC6122, PVC6222, PVC6247 on any of those sites. Must have missed em. Other great stuff, but the PVCs are pretty core to the preamp section.

So are these Cornell Dubilier supposedly better than the PS orange drops?

Or is this just trying to stay with what Ken used?

For myself,I used what Ken used. I don't believe one is better than the other. They both use a PVC foil and have similar construction.I'm not sure if there is a sonic difference.Perhaps someone with more experience can answer that.

they were avalable last year at mouser nos marked mallory...just using what ken used but liked them better than the 150's that came with the amp especially the .1 going to the pi pin 2 and presence pot 3rd lug, to my ears it cleaned up the signal/distortion..but this is with an express layout.

There have been some comments suggesting the ODs are brighter if you search the forum.
The following thread covers some ground and makes sense to me so maybe it might prove useful.

I think I may have gotten my PVC caps from Hoffman amplifiers.

Thanks, I normally hang in the Dumble section and occasionally wander over here to see what's up with the TW guys.

I don't know that much about the different dielectrics so I was just curious.
I believe Mr. Dumble liked the PS orange drops because they supposedly have a bit grainier or more of a growl type tone.

When I think polypropylene film caps I think smoother type tone.
