more tubes = happiness ...another 5 tubes later...
I reinstalled the VVR2 and moved the resistors & caps down to the tube socket.
A NOS Tungsram in V1 from Josh @ Tejas tubes (well, a set actually) and I'm back in business, sounding better than ever.
I still have a bit of oscillation if everything is cranked to the max & a guitar is plugged in, turn one knob back to 4 o'clock and it's gone. Hiss is down too....? I'll keep working on it, but it's more than usable.
Dana's VVR2 is all everyone says it is, a very nice piece of work/design.
