Why do Trainwrecks not have handles?

Post by mightyguru »

I recently purchased a 'pool clone...it is amazing and probably the best strat amp I've played. I appreciate all the guys here posting and helping me (whether you know it or not) find a great amp.

Dilemma is that the amp has no handle. I've seen tons of real 'wrecks and clones and 99% of them have no handle...why?

They were primarily studio amps originally and your asking a bit of those glued 45 degree joints with biscuits supporting the weight of the amp. They look great with one of the heavy, Boogie style leather handles.

Because you are supposed to lovingly cradle them in your arms like a newborn baby... :D

Would you put a handle on a baby? ...Don't answer that!...

It would adversely affect the amp's electromagnetic field, and hence the tone. Unless you use plastic bolts.

If you look closely at the first two Trainwrecks, you can see wood putty filling in the handle drill holes.

Francesca had handles. They looked like ken took a kitchen cabinet and made the cabinet door and took the handles and put them on top. It had veneer that fell of the front. The front panel was radiator vent grill! You can buy an exact copy at Home depot.

For those who are more interested in utility, the indented side slots on old Hiwatt cabs (see Jeff's site) could be nice.

OK, the magnetic field and the lack of strength with those joints makes sense. Thanks guys.

That is Francesca in her pristine condition.

I may have found another TW to examine. A friend asked what kind of amp the picture I had at the office was and I said a trainwreck. He said "my friends father has one of those, he's had it for about 20 years" I asked him if his frinds father would mine me checking it out. He said he would ask!

Maybe...just maybe.

Here is a picture of a cabinet I built for my Komet 60.
The cabinet is a combination of Bubinga and Flame Maple.
I don't care for standard top mounted handles and often make side handles like these.
They are extremely sturdy and don't take away from the lines of the cabinet.
