Rocket Master Voume

Post by james21789 »

Hey everyone,

I looking into building a rocket, most likely with a 6V6 power section. While I don't want to ruin a classic amp, the lack of a master volume concerns me. The friend I'm building it for will be using it for both solo practice as well as gigging. I am trying to decide between a pre-PI Master Volume and an air brake. Being new to the world of TW clones I thought I'd see what the general consensus is on how to best overcome this issue. I've been looking at these threads for inspiration (thanks Tom and Rob!!!).

VVR Is probably the better solution.

There is a lack of concensus on that. The VVR may be more sexy and expensive but "better" is all in the ears of the beholder. I have heard it in octal Rockets in both modes - scaling the whole amp and scaling just the power amp - and prefer other, more simple methods of employing a master volume.

Check also the threads on the "Rocker" aka Rockster 66 (with KT-66s) for discussions regarding alternative solutions.

I put a LarMar MV in a big bottle rocket the other day. The guy who owns the amp called me a few days later and was beaming about it, going off on how much he loved it. He said finally he could remove a couple of dirt pedals from his board. :-)

I control the voltage through the PI no MV and no VVR on the Rocket and I like what I use.

This is referenced in Merlin's book but I and my friend Colossal learned about this trick in my Egnator Rebel 20. Then I read about it in Prichard's amps and finally when I got Merlin's book.

I will someday compare the watts control/prime control to the LarMar.

I have never used a VVR.
