"Dongbiter" 30 pics online

Post by Gaz »

Sorry if that's a little crude

http://www.proguitar.eu/ProGuitar.eu/Songwriter_30.html

All resistors are shrink wrapped, of course, but it's easy to see the overall topology: Cathode bias, Cut control for treble, usual bright switch, parallel input stage (I think). I think the bass control just variably adds in a larger coupling cap (I've found this type very lame with the typical Alpha pot tapers, however.)

Kind of a boring little amp! hehe.

Just noticed that there's NFB too going into the LTP.

That's one of the few amps I was salivating for it's release. I just can't justify $4k or whatever they are asking for it. Doubly so now after looking inside it.

FYI the images are transparent so if you want them you'll have to copy the screen or print them.

Neat post thanks.

This amp is a huge disappointment. The one at the NY show didn't sound good at all. This screams of the "cashing in on Ken's name" by the family. $4K for that thing is ridiculous.

I would think the break down is roughly like this:
$600 in parts (less is purchased in bulk)
$1400 in labor and Komet company fees per amp.
$2000 profit to the TW estate.

I could be wrong, it could be $450 in parts.

Paralellel V1, simple bass control, two caps under board and it's looks like a mix of a Marshall Lite IIB and Matchless lightning

Ordered my cab and faceplate and will be working on the boards this weekend for the Songbird 30.

Going to use 260v Heyboer PT, 4k3 OT and Hammond 158L choke. Will run 250kB pots for bass and Treble-Cut. A 500k for the volume pot.

Mark,

I built a vary similar amp, except 18 watts, sheesh about 8 years ago. I put the parallel triodes on a switch, single/parallel. Simple tone and volume controls.

Darin

I have your layout for that EF86 lite 18w is that the one?

That is a great looking circuit.

Man, that layout is pretty wonky as I did it in powerpoint  That however is not the amp. The EF86 lite is a smokin' little amp though. The amp in question was an old HiFi amp that I converted to an 18 watter, then tweaked by adding the single/parallel switch and some other little things to clean up the layout. It's a very lively little thing and was gigged hard for about 3 years before I started gigging with 30 watters.

I know the Spitfire is a little different in the PI values but I gigged with my clone for a couple years it was perfect for bar gigs.

Hmmmmm. IMHO, and I am by no means an expert at this, this amp doesn't look like the one on the songwriter30 trainwreck page. There's 2 toggle switches on the front (possible that they were just 2, 2-way switches and the new one is a three way), and from the rear chassis shot of the original, it doesn't look like a 12ax7 in the V2 position.

Anyone want to comment on that? here's the link: http://www.trainwreck.com/sw30.html

I see what you are seeing.

You are probably correct about the 2 toggles giving an A / B or both

keep in mind they are building off of one of two amps made. I guess "bree" was the dumbed down (simplified) for production version.. Not the one in the pictures.

Most likely the tube that was originally used is no longer in production making mass production just not possible to give a warranty or fill orders.

It's hard to do anything but speculate from the pictures on the homepage. It almost looks like it's a rectifier tube but it's a long ways from the PT. If that was the case it could be just in a position to eclipse the smaller preamp tube in the picture.

The PT looks much bigger then the komet amp. Possibly multi voltage with a 5v tap.

If you feel that V2 is not a 12ax7. what other tubes can you use a Phase invertor that are the size of a rectifier tube. - Discuss.

The wide PT on Inger looks to be Ampeg.
I can't tell if the OT is Pacific or Dynaco
