Proximity of pots and tubes

Post by jaysg »

One of the obvious things that stand out on these KF amps are how the pots are jammed together and how close the el-84's are. I would guess that he's violating the spacing distance for el-84's.

I have this marginal idea of building a wreck in a JTM45 style Al chassis. Any opinions on mojo gain/loss if you don't follow his approaches?

The spacing isn't a problem. Some amps i have seen over the years, are closer spaced than Kens. Ken lays the amps out and moves the tubes so that the leads rubs to and from the tubes to the board etc..are short runs.

Back in the day a lot of amp mod guys (when working on Marshall's) used to punch a preamp tube hole in between v2 and v3 on the preamp side. I always thought that it was really tight and that there would be issues with interference, but I guess it wasn't an issue.

Funny thing, on most of the Marshall's there was a perfectly good hole already punched for a 4th 12ax7 because they had a standard chassis that worked for all heads, including the 4th tube for tremolo or p.a. heads.

Guess the spacing is OK.
