Marshall 4x10 for Express?

Post by telewacker »

I'm going to grab a Marshall 1965B 4x10 with 35 watt Celestions and I was wondering what you guys think about using it with a Ceriatone TWreck Express that I have on order? I'll still get a 4x12 eventually, but the portability factor of the 4x10 is definitely appealing. Any idea on how it will sound with the Express?

Hey telewacker,

That's an interesting idea. Most of the 4x10's I've played through have been of the Fender variety with an open back. Being that it's a Marshall it's going to have a closed back and will have a tighter sound than a Fender. What year is the cabinet? I haven't heard Celestion 35's before but they might be an interesting variety that provide a more mid-enhanced sound.

For me, I'd prefer a 2x12 for portability over a 4x10, but you'll definitely move more air with the 4x10. Most likely you're going to have a fairly bright, tight sound with that arrangement. Please let us know how it sounds when you get the Ceriatone...I'd be very interested!

In the future I am going to have a couple of Marshall 4x12's up for sale. Most of them are empty 4x12's from the 70's that I used in a 70's rock tribute band I was in, but now that we're on hiatis I won't be needing them.

Well the price is good and I have heard good things about both the cab and the 35 watt 10 " Celestions. I think it's mid 80s but I'm not sure.

I have a 2-12 with Weber ceramic Blue Dogs that sounds great, and I have some G12-65s that I can put in as well. (The webers and 1265s are actually surpisingly similar. They have different midranges, but they are both very smooth and compressed, with good high end detail).

If I was to guess, I would imagine the 4x10 will be a better match for the Express clone, but we'll see.

I'm all about experimenting, especially when it's outside the Marshall voice which is where I've spent the most time. After years of working on that sound I know what I like there. Moving forward I think the combination of a 4x10 with the Express will be very interesting.

I like the 65's a lot too...they're almost like a variation of the Vintage 30 in a way. Defiinitely some cool stuff going on in the mids on those speakers.

Sometimes the mix of a couple of speakers sounds great to my ears. I particularly like the combo of greenback 25's with blackback 30's as well as a G12H-30 with a Celestion Blue. Nice mix!

I'm all about experimenting too, and it's expensive! :o

I'll let you know how I like the cab when I get the amp from Nik.

I've got a Marshall 4x10 that I have played with my Express clones and I like it with some caveats...

My 4x10 is a later cab that has Celestion "gold backs" in it (whatever the heck those are). The cab was sold as a mate to the JTM600 heads. It's an OK cab, but I dont think it's as good a sounding cab as the ones with the G10-M-35 Celestions.

It definitely was bright, and you might wann roll back the treble. It also definitely wasnt "Marshall" 4x12 kinda thump in the low end department... I found I needed to add a 1x12 cab to the mix to get the kinda low end "grunt" I want in a live tone. I keep meaning to change the speakers in the 4x10 cab, but havent got the $$$ to get decent speakers, so it just sits. But I completely hear ya on the portability issue.

For the most part, I just run a pair of 1x12's with Scumback custom 65 watt Celestion clones.

I'm making a 4 x 12 cab off the plans over @ 18.watt. With dowelled corners as long as you got a few tools like a drill and jiggie its not too hard. Hardest things the tolexing. The straight parts are easy its the corners that are tricky but with corner protectors you dont see them anyway. It works out at half the price you could buy one. The speakers are what cost i'm lucky, its the only time that something in britian is cheaper than across the pond usually everything here is the same in pounds as dollars (twice the price! :( )
