Preparing for my first real build AC30 normal channel

Post by Kborg »

I have been playing a Kane wreck rocket clone for years and loving it but I recently got a heritage AC30 clone (Brighton III) and fell in love with the normal channel.

I am planning to build a rocket with just volume , cut and a bright switch. Possibly adding a master volume and half power switch.

I have built a couple single ended amps from books but always follow layout diagrams instead of schematics. I can solder and assemble but have no real deep understanding to be able to deviate from the path. I figure not only do I really love this circuit/amp but figure it should be as simple as possible to experiment with.

If anyone could show me how to mod an existing rocket layout I would greatly appreciate it.

I know it takes one less 12ax7... easier.... no bass or treble pot.

Got Edcor trannies and choke coming as well as a chassis from RJ.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Mike

Is this the wrong place to post. I look at it as modifing a Rocket so figured this was the best place.

Thanks,

Mike

Well you can built the amp in the style you want TW transformer orientation or change it up.
Volume, cut and a bright switch. Possibly adding a master volume and half power switch.
The board is where your going to have the most changes since you no longer will have a tone stack.

Someone taking the time to draw a layout for you is the main problem I can see. Not sure if I can do that or not, feeling crappy again.

I'll look around at some schematics and layouts and see if there is a good one that can be used. Your idea is really a Dr Z Maz you know!

draw your own layout. just take a look at ac30s and similar amps

My design skills are weak in terms of the actual electrical circuit. I am working on my understanding of schematics. I can copy component for component duplicating an actual amp that is in front of me but I am going to isolate just the normal channel and do not feel completely confident in my ability to determine which parts can be excluded from the other channels.

I kinda paint by numbers right now and rely and assistance from seasoned builders.

Thanks

A good learning opportunity exists here ... take a Vox Bright/Nornmal channel schematic and identify the two separate signal paths, I'd highlight one in one color and the other in another color. Then take a layout and highlight the two circuits on the layout ... that will identify which components are which. Then you can remove the unwanted channel.

You'll have an unused triode, I'd consider doing a single/parallel input jack setup ... the parallel inputs are so thick sounding.

This is starting to get fun! Can anyone direct me to some clean schematics for an AC30? All the ones I have found so far are a little hard to read.

Thanks for the input.
