I've seen two schematics on Tag with tube recto and using a choke but not sure if the amps were ever built. David Spicer is one and RJC is the other I think.

I have an experimental testing version of an Express that I built with both the Express and Rocket power supplies and I can switch back and forth between the two of them in real time. The Rocket uses the 260-0-260V secondary tap along with the tube rectifier and 15 Henry choke. I also have an analog volt meter that I can switch to any of the B+ nodes and it clearly shows the significant voltage sag and recovery with the Rocket power supply.

Technically it is all very cool, but sonically the sound of the Express through the Rocket power supply is remarkably different and not all that cool. To my ears the Express through a tube rectifier and choke, does not sound good at all. I tried using a solid State rectifier plug and the sag remained as well as the not so great sound... YMMV.

I'll be curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I made the preamp section modular so i could swap it out for the Rocket style... but I haven't built that module yet.

However, if you consider what you are saying from a schematic point of view, the Rocket preamp architecture looks a lot like the 59 Bassman, which was copied by the Marshall as well. A Rocket preamp into a pair of fixed bias El34's should share a lot in common with an old 50 watt Marshall. We know this combination works out well... Now if you can make that stretch... consider that the Rockster amp (A Rocket preamp with an Octal output section) ideally uses a pair of KT66 tubes in cathode biasing and you have yet another data point to indicate that we should expect this to be a happy union.

This was inspired by a local guy - Jason Cox who was a great teacher back when I first got interested in tube circuits. He runs a net based shop called http://boozhoundlabs.com/. Back in the day he had a lot of DIY tube amp "How To" pages... Anyway he had encouraged me to build a modular test frames for exploring amp ideas.

In this case I have tried to break down each section of a Trainwreck amp so I can make simple swaps of each module. The preamp module includes the tubes, circuit board, and tone controls. When I create another preamp module I'll add more of the "Euro Strip" connections so it requires only a couple screwdrivers and no soldering to swap out.

... on topic - I had forgotten about the AC-50. Seems like all the cool sounding amps except the Wrecks tend to pump up the voltages a bit more. I'll listen to my test amp again and see if I can define the differences I hear between the two power supplies with the otherwise standard Express circuit.

I know who you're talking about. Gerry! You have a secret fetish for bananna jack amp modules!

I all seriousness, your modular TW is so awesome it makes me misty.
