Quick question on Standby/ Power supply

Post by johndandry »

Better to have the first cap before the Standby switch?
Also, Bleeder resistors or no? Thanks

As I recall having the first filter cap before the standby switch is best if you have a tube rectifier so it can start charging slowly as the rectifier starts conducting, instead of just slamming the rectifier with heavy inrush when the standby is switched on. OTOH standby is a useless thing anyway.

Bleeder resistors are always good IMO because they make the amp more safe for people that shouldn't be in there in the first place, by keeping those deadly voltages out of the amp as soon as it's off.

They're cheap, and add safety, no reason not to.

I actually forget them myself often because I'm just following a specific layout that doesn't, though, so I'm not perfect :D

first, there is not much need for a standby switch. second, its better to switch AC than DC. Bleeder resistors depend on the circuit. It may change the circuit. marshall for instance used two 56k resistors in series, loading down the preamp more than it would have been otherwise.

It’s basically an Express power section. SS recto. However, I’m not shooting for an exact clone.
I’ve noticed Marshall’s standby is before the SS recto. So maybe would this be the preferred method?

Yes, AC is easier on the switch wrt arcing (which burns the contacts) than DC.
