Liverpool: speaker most similar to a Greenback?

Post by jaysg »

I've got a G1265, a couple G12H30s, and some V30's. To get close to the ideal, which of these three sound the most like a G12 Greenback?

I've looked at the graphs and the V30 looks closest, but I know that could be misleading.

If you are talking about an old G12M 25watt "greenback" probably NONE of those speakers, same goes for a modern G12M which are much brighter.

The closest these days to an old G12M would be either a Scumback M75 or a Celestion Heritage G12M 20 watter.

Personal appearance but V30's sound nothing like greenbacks to my ears.

They have quite a mid peak and make everything sound way too loud from experience of my last 3 amps (Orange TT, H&K Switchblade and the Ceriatone Expression).

Out of what you have the G12H's would be first on my list for a try. Although they don't sound greatly like Greenbacks either.

I'm lucky enough to have 1975 vintage Greenback in my cab now (it did have new V30's in) but the amp is so sensitive that I can hear the difference between wiring the cab in series at 8ohm and in parallel at 4ohm (better in parallel to my ears).

The 4x12 cab which my Greenbacks were originally in also had 2 G12H's from 1975 in it too. I've no experience of the G1265's at all.

James,

As Dave said, the V30s have an annoying (to me at least) upper mid peak ~1.5K to 3K that is ear fatiguing.

I think the H30s and 65s will sound best out of what you have. Of course I favor Fanes for everything  , but I think the 65s might be your best choice.

I'm really attempting to get the idea. At some future date I will be able to buy more speakers...not today though.

I just brought home a pair of Austin Speaker Works 12's. A KTS 60 and KTS70.
They are both in the same cab. Wow, They sound great , no break in either.
The KTS 70 is patterned after a G12H 30 with a 70 hz cone and the KTS60 is modeled after the G12H30 55hz cone. Ron has done killer job on these and really knows his stuff. He even found the guy who did the Pulsonic cones and got the original formula and had them recreated. He calls them
" Featherlite" . Anyway, another option for you.
