Hiwatt / Laney ∆

Post by Pulsonic »

Gents

last summer i finally landed a (looks) stock '69 Laney Supergroup [SG100]. what is the overall delta between a similar era Hiwatt DR103 [100watt] ? have never played a classic '69-'72 Hiwatt so i'm just guessing. both have massive Partridge iron [this Laney is ridiculous]. does the Laney sit somewhere in grind/gain, in between a Marshall & Hiwatt ? am getting massive gain/non-distortion until about 8.7+ on the knob. at that point it is crazy loud of course but i like pants flapping =\

choke was replaced btw - trying to source a correct unit from uk
using a variac at 90vac to keep the plate voltage down

The brand of transformers is the only link between the two. Partridge, like all transformer manufacturers, routinely made custom transformers to spec for amp manufacturers.

Cool amp, btw. 8)

Late followup, yes gents =\

Mark/anyone - know the specs inductance/resistance - for the TG9688 Partridge choke ? Want to get that MM out of there. There was an vintage oem unit out of Italy fs a few yrs. ago, no joy.
8) amp indeed Mark, thx for the compliment. A cult-of-pants-flapping machine. @cerrem, you may be getting an email =\

The choke seems based on the Radiospares deluxe 20h 690ohms - it is decisive for limiting screen dissipation (on early marshalls and laneys)
