Rebuilding vintage Magnatone 260 cabinet, advice?

Post by nuke »

Looking for advice on this project.

I'm primarily an electronics person, handy with other stuff. Not a lot of experience in cabinetry, I've done plenty of luthiery repairs though. The most sophisticated wood-working power tool I own is a 10" jobsite tablesaw.

I'm working my way to the back corner of my garage, hoping it will see daylight again... I got the Silvertone 1484 up and running, and it turned out fantastic. Wish I'd done that one years ago.

Next in line is a Magnatone 260, nearly a basket case. I've had it for about 20 years. When I first got it, I established that the amplifier chassis was actually completely functional despite being dirty. I had the two 12K5R alnico speakers reconed at WeberVST way back then.

I set it aside because it was a lot of work. The amp sat in water at some point long before I got it. The horizontal bottom panel of 3/4" ply is completely ruined, as are the bottom ends of the left and right sides, and the front and rear trims for the bottom. Because it was already falling apart, I went ahead and took it apart so I could pack it flat. I have all the parts, even the water damaged stuff, so it is possible to duplicate from those.

Curiously, the baffle board was completely unaffected. I want to re-use the baffleboard, the top panel and the upper rear cover panel.

Construction is pretty simple, 5-ply plywood, 5/8" on the bottom, the sides and top are 3/4". All are straight slab cuts, no angles.

The joinery is "groove", as best I can describe it. The top and bottom are cut with thin "tongues" and the sides have grooves cut into them. The panels were fit together, glued and stapled. So, pretty simple construction.

Photos of what's left of the cabinet attached.
