Single Speaker for 100W amp

Post by Herec »

Anybody have anything they'd put in a 1X12 for a Superlead? It's at like a '67 spec right now, might change it to '74 or something, but I've always been partial to the H magnet sound, but I'll try anything.

I live in a small apartment, and a 1x12 is all I have space for, and I hate to see it just collect dust. Realistically wouldn't go above bedroom level with it at the moment, but who knows.

Exactly where my first thought was.

Didn't know if anyone had experience with the >100W offerings from Eminence or something.

Electro-Voice Force 12 can handle hundreds of watts.

For great low volume sounds you should choose a high efficient or sensitive speaker.

The db rating at or above 100db will ensure that you don't need much juice to drive it.

This is opposite of what I have experienced. I could be nuts though. My Jbls need a lot of juice to get going. At the lowest volumes they are ice pick but still loud. Once I turn it up they fill out but knock down the walls. It wasn't until I got some dt10s which have 92db sensitivity that I was able to get drive at lower volumes.

Try an Eminence Commonwealth 12"
I likes em.
But they are heavy buggers.

If you are never using more than a couple watts you can use a couple watts times 5-6 speaker.

25w speaker will handle a 100 with a sock in it's mouth.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I might build a DR504 soon, and it'd be nice if I could use it for that too, but loud.

Is the commonwealth pretty much a JBL with an aluminum dust cap?

The Eminence Delta Pro-12a is another option.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

If you're looking for a speaker breakup to color the sound of your amp, high wattage prolly isn't what you need.
The Emi Commonwealth is rated at 225w. Conservative methinks.
Yeah - cast frame with metal dust cap - heavy.
To me it has a flat response - what the amp puts out is what you'll get.
EV12L's much the same IMHO.
I do like JBL's too...

Well, if you are gonna dime it, then I would not use the EVM12L. I have fried one with my 100W SLP. But yeah, I dimed the amp.

Impressive Jelle - most EVM12L's never get broken in.
But blowing one
I likes it loud too.
What ?

So what do you figure the amp was putting out dimed?

Over 200w?
