EV SRO Coffee Can AlNiCo

I posted here a long while back about wanting to try an EV SRO and the time finally came today when I got to. I ended up buying a pristine example off of eBay because I needed to satisfy a particular speaker fix that wasn’t gratified by a FB deal I came across for a Celestion AlNiCo Cream. $180 shipped. Pretty good huh? Not so long story short, the dipshit double boxed by putting the Celestion speaker box inside a much larger one with nowhere near enough padding to secure it. Needless to say after tumbling around for a few days via Satan’s personal delivery service or UPS it arrived with a good deal of voice coil rub. After informing him he proceeds to block me on FB. I talked to Paypal and they covered the return shipping and all will be well in a day or two. No wonder that dickhead was using his girlfriend’s account. Seems to me this probably isn’t unusual for him.

So.... I’m not 100% but based on playing the SRO today for a bit with my octal Liverpool I seriously think this is my new favorite speaker. Something very sweet about it. It has a lovely silky smooth tone that is so well balanced. I was using my homemade snakehead Tele with singles and the Liverpool which is loaded with NOS goodness and real Pacific TW trannies. It’s one of my best reference amps. I didn’t get a chance to take it to higher levels but I was extremely pleased with it. Just wanted to share since I’m such speaker nut and this is the AlNiCo to end all other AlNiCos. Check out the condition.

What are the specifics of the cone in your SRO? eg fabric or paper edge, smoother or ribbed cone etc.
Pic?

It's a smooth cone but I can't tell whether there's a fabric or paper edge on it; could you take a pic a bit closer in, just need to include a section of the doped area, from the outside of the cone to the gasket?
Mine has a fabric edge.

A alternative 12" that can still be found used and is cheaper is this Utah MH 120 model with a 4" voice coil.
It's got the same size magnet, but is a Bass driver. So it may need to get reconed as it's on the mellow side, but man it's a tight punchy driver!

It gives my Altec 418 15" drivers a run for its money

pdf64 check those out....

Steve, that looks like a fun and big SOB. I dig the aluminum dust cap. My favorite was the Altec 417 but now I think the EV may have replaced that one. Still need to put a good few more volts into it and make sure.

I picked up a pair of EV SRO/12's in a Yamaha 212 solid state amp of some sort a bunch of years ago. Running my JTM-45 through one of them sounded awesome. I've still got them somewhere downstairs. They have a little bit of water damage from the surround to about a half inch in on the cone, but it doesn't affect the sound. The dust caps are both a little mangled and I'll eventually get them reconed, but they're good enough for now. When we moved about 6 months ago, no one volunteered to move that amp. It weighs over 100 lbs. I may convert it to a Twin of some sort if I can get the right size chassis made. :D

That may be paper edge, but not sure.
