WTB Dale 180k and 130k RN65D

Post by Charlie Wilson »

Hello, looking for RN65D in both 180k and 130k. Will buy or trade for some 80s production 100k(ish) values.
Thanks,

Wanting to build a ODR #060 clone I presume?

V1A/B are ultra important to getting one to sound like the original. Those parts are unobtanium today...unfortunately.

The plate resistors used on that particular amp are actually Carbon Film (Deposited Carbon) 1% military parts...not metal film. They are hermetically sealed and the element was dipped in a special silicon oil before it was assembled into the ceramic tube since they were designed for extreme conditions. They have their own sonic signature which is very different compared to the pre-laser trimmed metal film Dale RN65's of the 1960's-early 1980's Dale RN's. 060 had one MEPCO and one KEY...both, technically RN70 resistors but not metal film...deposited carbon as stated previously. EKC (Electra) made these same exact same parts made to the same exacting specifications. Western Electric (WE) was the first branding of these but they were not made by WE...they were made by MEPCO, EKC and KEY. BTW, EKC and MEPCO were unrelated back when these were developed...completely different companies at that time. Key also was a completely different company.

That said, I have plenty of unobtainium resistors worth auditioning if you like. If you want to go with metal film like the Dale RN65's then I'd recommend the Dale RNC65H molded version which is just an upscale version of the RN65C's. The exact same non-laser trimmed resistive element inside a much more ruggedized package...a better part but the exact same sonic footprint...just a different package. Molded is simply more durable and moisture resistant compared to the epoxy dipped versions and I have that in a 130K value. The ACI 180K RN65C is very similar sonically to the Dale...again, it is molded and not laser trimmed which for audio is a good thing. For 180K, if you want metal film the Electra MF6C is a good choice...not going to sound like the original part being metal film but a known great sounding plate resistor. Alternatively, I am a huge fan of Texas Instruments resistors and the RN15X is a deposited carbon part...similar sonic footprint to the hermetically sealed part Dumble used on 060...not exact but not too far off either. TI made stellar, non-laser trimmed resistors back when they were a preferred vendor to NASA, the military and Industrial applications.

Anyway, if interested, please let me know.
