Another Aussen clip w/Bludo HiVoltage&2290 -better tone?

Post by dogears »

I did a scrappy take before work using the Bludo High Voltage Music Man Skyline amp. Other than the Music Man iron, component and value wise, the exact circuit in Robbens amp. Of course, an amp with 700V iron powering 6L6 tubes will be very different in feel and sound to an amp using 35 year old Fender twin iron. Key here is the pot settings. Treble up about 25%, Mids up about 60% (15% taper), and Bass up 70% (15% taper). Input gain is up around 70% (15% taper). Master has a big ass bright cap and that is up around 70% as well (15% taper). Loopalator cables counteract the bright cap and the loop is set around 11 oclock on the send/return.

I did change the 2290 settings on this. I think it helped.

Lastly, the strings on the Carruthers are 6 months old!! Can you say dead? Certainly the tone and sustain would be much improved with fresh ones. I will change them later today.

None the less, here is the clip. Recorded in five minutes with lots of clams. Hard to get "in the zone" while getting ready to go to work! It has moments but lots of mollusks....

Sounds great Scott. And as always great playing. It sounds alot fatter than Robbens tone, mabe because of the tone settings and difference in trannies? I'm not sure what the 2290 settings are that you're reffering too.
Anyway again, sounds great.
A bit of a newb question here being i'm not that experienced in amp building, but what would the difference be soundwise in musicman iron and twin iron using the same circuit? My guess is that's where the bigger sound is coming from?

THe MM Iron has more of a Thick wooly character to the Mids, and a more "woodwind" like low end artifact, the Fender Iron has more of a saturated Woof to the low end, and gives more when you lean into it.

How does your tranny set compare to the fender and mm irons?

well, the set in the clip you just heard is MY Music man style Iron, My standard OT is a proprietary design, similar to a fender wind, but different in a few ways. Tone wise it is similar to a twin OT.

The OT's I sold here are Twin Reverb OT's with extra 8&16 taps.

Funk the amp sounds wonderful nice job as usual..My favorite is my MM power Super Twin OPT..700v ones touch sensitive as a mofo gotta watch the clams.. Recommend the build 124 style though either way..

Thanks for the description Funk. I have original Twin Iron i intend on using in a 124 build, but have been looking at other options as well. It's a first build for this kind of amp so I'm not expecting it to come out as a masterpiece. It's just for hobby as i don't have alot of time for building. I've recieved some suggestions from people here and a couple of techs i know. Will see how it goes.
From alot of the clips I've heard i think your amps sound great BTW.

Excellent tone. I really like the mid content but the whole spectrum is covered well and its got the bloom and response to pick attack that eludes some clones.
