Dumble 1-12 closed back cabinet

Post by sixstringer »

I'm looking for the specs (dimensions, design, details, etc) of the closed back
cabinet that Dumble built for Larry Carlton. I believe it holds 1 12" EV
speaker. Any photos? or links?
Thanks

Do a search for Thiele TL806 on this forum. You'll find links to the original EV TL806 plans and a lot of pics built by many of us here. Boogafunk also sells these cabs among others. Scottie at Boogafunk is a top notch builder. 8)

I've completed the 1-12 cab, using the Dumble cab photos and the specs from the EV TL806 design. The cab has a interior volume of 1.3 cu.ft, the ports are slightly larger than the Dumble cab. I used ABS tubing for the ports , routing a 1/4" dado, 3/8" deep, epoxying the ports in place and then using a straight router bit with a pilot bearing to make the final port cuts, perfectly matching the ABS tubes. The shell is finger jointed 3/4" clear pine the front and back panels are Baltic birch. The speaker is mounted on the back of the baffle with the grille cloth attached to the front.

How long are your ABS tubes?
Did you use the same total port area as the tl806, just
as circular ports?
Or are those ports somewhat smaller than the tl806 plans show?
Thanks.
Asking because I have built a tl806 cab per the plans from EV, and I'm
still trying different speakers in it for optimum sound.
Clearly it works best with very bright speakers--EV12M-L, or JBL D120.
Port size has a big effect on the rather amazing bass response of the cabinet.

The ports are smaller than the TL806 design with the port cover removed but larger the the Dumble photos I've seen. The speaker is a EV Force for now until a EVM12L can be secured. I think there might be a D120 available, so I might try that too. The port depth is 4" (1/2 the depth of the cab interior).

Thanks for your response.
For what it's worth, I've tried the cab so far with:
JBL 2202- a woofer, great companion to an open back JBL D120
JBL K120 paper dome- miss the brightness of the alum dome
Weber Neomag paper dome-same as K120, plenty low end with both
JBL D 120 alum dome-sounds great, port adjustment makes a difference
EV12M-L clearly the cab was designed for this speaker, big sound,
still very bright
Have not had a chance to gig it yet.
It's a remarkable design.

Wow!
Awesome job! :D

Did you build the head cab as well?

I can't wait to build mine.

Thanks very much. Both head and speaker cab were constructed in a similar manner, using Dumble photos I could find, + the great photo Guitarman18 posted above. I played only a little with the speaker cab so far, I hope to try it with a JBL D120 soon.

Do you have previous experience in building cabinets?

My problem is I never worked that much with wood until the last 10 years or so when I got into building Fender style guitars.

I do have a table saw and have been reading up on box joint jigs.

I understand a very high quality dado blade setup is mandatory.

Other than building some garage cabinets out of MDF, I have no real past woodworking experience. I have a bench top table saw, a mini belt sander, a router, home built router table and a bench top drill press . I found the box joint jig layout on a woodworking website and built the speaker hole cutting jig out of scrap plywood. I've built about 8 amp cabs and learned a lot with every one. Making good tolex corners was probably the hardest part. It takes me along time to finish a cabinet.

If you've not visited:

That guy is the Norm Abram of amp cabinets.

Try this for the finger joint jig:
