Re: Which is the Dumble
Is there any chance that both are 183, just with different settings?
...or that neither are?
But PLEASE let's have the answer - as I'm sure that more discussion and disagreement will follow no matter what it is.

IMO there's always "any chance that...".LPSGME wrote:Is there any chance that...

could you perhaps post this clip in the Dumble reference thread and add perhaps some info concerning the guitar, speaker cabinet, speakers, recording gear etc.?
Thanks and all the best,
Max

Re: Which is the Dumble
I guess I missed the post saying that #2 is 183.
Is there a post saying what is #1 ?

Re: Which is the Dumble
Clip 1 is a special TR TS1 mod'ed by Bill himself
100 watt 6L6 , Mod has the Mac Smoothie Mod also known as the Eastcoast Mod , Both example's were played with a Custom Shop ordered one piece swamp ash 58 Strat , As we all know Strats are hit or miss with Dumble style Amps
This Guitar really sounds great thru both

Mr Dumble,Mr Dumble wrote:Sorry Dude. I speak for myself only. Show me where in my post I said "No one has any doubts". You cant. I owned 183 and know how it sounds. There is no doubt,#2 is the Dumble.
to avoid misunderstandings:
AFAIK "There is no doubt" is usaually used in the sense of "there can be no doubt", "it is obvious", "this is a fact" etc.. Just to make clear my prejudice concerning this. If you just wanted to say: "I have no personal doubts", I am sorry for my misinterpretation.
Max wrote:If I would sit in the control room with whatever Dumble ODS in the recording booth and the monitors would produce tones like those my headphones transport to my ears while listening to Mac Daddy’s clips, I would at once call a service tech to check if the amp or some piece of recording gear isn't at the brink of a nervous breakdown.
Please do not take me wrong: I did not refer to the tone of these two amps in my post but to the tone of these two clips as they have been presented to me by my computer and headphones.Mr Dumble wrote:Not me, I LOVE it!!
I like the tone of #183 as it is presented in Scott's clips or in your clips as an example. I admit, not my all time favorite "Dumble tone", but a very nice one and IMO very suitable in a lot of musical contexts.
But as perceived by me in Mac Daddy's clips, IMO the tone of both amps is masked to a degree that their harmonic structure is at the brink of falling apart in my perception and I start to percieve parts of it as "noise" and no longer as "tone".
And, indeed, any Dumble amp which would be presented to me like this in one of Scott's clips as an example, or by the monitors of some first class recording studio, I would deem to be malfunctional.
So if - as an example - Scott would have posted exactly these two clips as being recorded with his usual recording gear and expertise, and he would have asked: "Wich is the Dumble?" my personal spontaneous answer would have been: "What do you say, Scott, one of these amps is a Dumble? That's surprising. Are you sure that all tubes are working fine and nothing is wrong with the speaker?
But I admit: my individual perception of course and with my listening gear and based on my personal experiences with playing Dumble amps, that may of course differ from your personal experiences.
Cheers,
Max
