I had some fun trying different position for my trusty sm57, hope you find this interesting.
The amp is the hybrid HRM, but this time is on the low gain side
Guitar is 2005 Les Paul Historic 1958

Great comparison.

Personally I like the clarity of pos3. 1 is too brittle sounding, 2 and 4 too dark.

What is the speaker?

The position I usually use at gigs is about a 30 degree angle, half way between the dome and edge and about 2" away from the grill.
