WELL, I could not resist. QUINN TKT 183 6L6 INCOMING!

Post by Mr Dumble »

Yes sir. All NOS again. This one will be exactly like the one I have now with the obvious exception of replacing the Marshall transformer to accept the 6L6s. 3-4 months. The waiting is the hardest part.

Dear Tag, I'm happy for you that your new amp turned out what you wished for.
I'm a player like you and have very basic understanding on how an amp works. I really appreciate this forum, not because I want to build an amp myself, but to learn more how an amp works and what make them tick a certain way. I have not much to bring to the party, that's why my posts are pretty sparse. This forum is a pretty good education for me and I thank all the builders here who share their knowledge.

I love this forum, because it's so different than any other music gear forums. I understand that one is excited about his/her new acquisition, however I love this forum because it's not a marketing platform.

I have a simple taste in amps, but my amps are built by a small well known one-man operation company. I love 'em and have my third one on order, but I think this is not the right forum to post over and over how good my new amp is. I respect the builders on this forum and I think it's not the right forum to market any individual builder. If I'm wrong, please moderators correct me.
I read your posts on TGP and as much as I understand your point, these posts mostly went crazy and not in a good way.

Of course, you can tell me not to read them. But I joined this board because I don't like the hostile and mostly unprofessional comments towards certain gear, players and opinions .

I understand your excitement, however please don't turn this great forum into another TGP.

Thanks,

Wow!! What a bizarre post. ?? Sorry don't get it. There are at least 10 threads on the first page of the Dumble Discussion Forum that have the builders name or the amps commercial name in the title. Are you going to go on everyone of those threads and tell the OP that he shouldn't be posting either because he's naming the amp or the builder therefore somehow marketing that builder or that amp by that builder, or are you just going after Tag here for some reason? Sure comes across as the later. If so. It's not cool and it sheds a much poorer light on this Forum than anything Tag has ever done here.
If you are here for the reason you say you are, then you should be asking Tag what this new amp is about and finding out how it works instead of blasting him for posting about it.
I for one, am very interested in this amp. As a matter of fact I ordered one right after Tag ordered his. Interesting concept powering 6L6's with tweaked EL34 power. Our gain, your loss I guess.

Maybe your post count should still be at 14?

Hi Tag

Did you ever use 6L6 in the original 183? I thought I read at one point that you tried but didn't like them, must be wrong if your ordering one for 6L6

btw congrats on the new amp. I've always enjoyed listening to your clips and reading your posts ( even when you are shit stirring)

Thanks Chuck. Great to have someone here who sees things as they really are. :D
I dig my amp so much, I just thought a slightly different flavor would be cool. I called Shad, and he said he had tried plugging a 183 preamp into a 6L6 power amp, and said it was amazing in a different way, and I trust him. Giving it a shot!

VERY GOOD VERY GOOD!

NOTHING in my post was inflamatory or against the rules. Your post is, and is exactly why thread go "crazy and not in a good way".Take a look in the mirror as to why shit storms happen. Keep your opinions of others OUT of it, and there will be no trouble. I have every intention of staying within the guidelines. This is THE DUMBLE DISCUSSION part of the forum, and discussing Dumble type amps is what is done here. Very simple. If you have a problem, then yes, just ignore my posts and threads. Have a great day.

Hmm...good to hear the 6L6 power section sounds amazing with the 183 curcuit. Been wanting to try this build ( have some NOS parts) but didn't want to shell out for PT and OT when I have a set for a twin-reverb kicking around. Thanks for sharing.

Tag how are the two amps going to be set-up as far speaker cabinets and what speakers are you going to use for the EL34 verses the new 6L6 amp being built?

Will you go with a stereo gigging rig?

I'll be running my Quinn 183 preamp into a 6L6 power amp w/ a d-lator. Problem is my amp (which is the power amp) has the the Bluesmaster PI. Will the the non-HRM Skyliner pre-amp sound weird with the Bluesmaster Phase Inverter in my amp? It will probably be changed to a different config. if it doesn't sound right when I get the preamp. I've searched the forum and I havn't found anybody that used a non-hrm in to a Bluesmaster PI in any of their builds.

Hey Tag: :)

I had the same conversation with Shad right after you did. :) Very interested in this concept. Feel it will bring a different flavor to an already amazing platform. Speculation the Ford's amp may have been EL34's at one point and then converted to run 6L6's thus contributing to the unique tone of that amp. (aside from the playing obviously) Unfortunately the tranny wasn't measured to verify this at the time it was "looked" at so it's all speculation at this point in time. Maybe that can be verified down the road if anybody ever gets another look see inside the amp. (hopefully) Shad stated that the 183 pre amp into the 6L6 power amp yielded some very unique tones and turned a 5 minute experiment into a 45 minute playing session. Obviously there with be some refinement and tweaking to come, but like you I feel this will be a very cool concept once it's realized.

Take care

Chuck :)

Hey Mark. I really want a 1/12 combo, but the speaker proves to be the problem in that set up. I may have found the solution thanks to Brad however. He picked up a vintage 2/12 fender front ported cab that has 2 JBLs in it. ("D"s I think) It sounds AMAZING with the TKTs and Dumble, and he has 2 extra speakers. I am thinking one of those may do the trick. I just cant stand the sound of the EVs with these amps, although my E.Pro LOVED them. Any other speaker you can think of that would handle 100 watts and sound great with a Dumble? I dislike Altecs as well.

No, he just said he could not stop playing it! Shadster, care to elaborate on the differences you heard? I would love to get more info as well! :)
