Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Yes, indeed, your guitar playing and the sound of this amp, is excellent. Actually the best sound clip IMHO, this year (very similar to a fellow from Finland, couple of years ago, nick ¨mat¨, who had awesome sound with non-HRM here - still keeping the clip in my files).
The key expression someone used here is ¨edge of distortion¨ - indeed, if I wanted to demonstrate to someone what Dumble magic is all about, I would show your clip that you posted here on this thread. Needless to say, I gladly copied your schematics and appreciate your kindness to state that it is the very same that has been used to build your amp.
I honestly do not believe original Dumble would sound better.
As for the guitar used to make this clip, someone mentioned Stratocaster. Well, my guitar of choice has always been Gibson ES-340, and semi-acoustic electrics are more welcome in these quarters anytime ... but, that guitar you used sounds marvelous and it is in perfect harmony with the amp you made.
As for the music itself, well, as I stated, the amp with such an awesome sound, can be used for lots of types of music. It is also a good idea to keep it as 50W.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Great tones and playing Erwin!!
Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Erwin, thanks for sharing this version of the BM (non-hrm). This is the "perfect marriage" of preamp & OD sections for my playing style & (old) ears.
I just finished my take on it & it is simply fantastic!
I will post some clips when I get a change (& an updated schematic) but here are the basic changes in mine:
*Cathode biased Phillips 6L6WGB (2x)
*5U4 rectifier
*No FET
*120p Master bright cap
*post-OD treble bleed trimmer (.001 w/ a 1Meg pot to ground)
I run the Rock & PAB on (all the time). The "cleans" are huge & fat, not "too clean" (ie, sterile), but still clean.
The OD is simply stellar! Very responsive & usable with all the pickup configs of my HSH custom strat. Easy to "tune" with different V2 tube substitutions.
As I said, I'll post more info when I get a chance.
Thanks again!

Tubes for the Bluesmaster
All you Bluesmaster fans, what preamp and power amp tubes are you all using?
I will have mine finished tomorrow And I have a few NOS/UOS choices to play with in preamp tubes..
Mazda 12AX7S, Amperex 7025 (two or three), Tungsol 12AX7 long gray plate, Telefunken 12AX7 smooth plate, GE 12AX7 long gray plate, Siemens 12AX7 short plate, several RCA12AX7 gray plates, and last but probably not least, "mystery tube" which looks like a '50s RCA 12AX7 long blackplate but doesn't have the octagon on it and all else is wiped off.
UPDATE: I checked out some pix on the web and it IS the RCA.
I have a couple '80s Mullard 12AT7 and a Sylvania 12AT7 for the loop buffer.
Using 6L6GAs or 5881s in the power section.
Any recommendations?

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Erwin, that's a pretty aggressive line-up, except maybe the LPS PI. Are those TAD 6L6WGC-STRs designed to be like the Sylvania 387-STR?
UPDATE: I saw somewhere they are designed to replicate GE 6L6GCs rom the '60s.

V1=Amperex Bugle BoyAll you Bluesmaster fans, what preamp and power amp tubes are you all using?
V2=Mullard ECC83

V4/V5=Phillips 6L6WGB/5881

Here's a quick & dirty clip, just the OD.
Sorry for the occasional mic clipping... Not even the "best" the amp can sound (IOW, didn't mess with it alot..just set up & recorded.)

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Geezer you say that you run your amp with the Rock and PAB all the time.
Did you use the BM PAB where the mid pot is lifted with or without a pad?
The tone stack doesn't do much good if you run PAB all the time unless you have it wired differently.

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Yes, PAB & Rock "on" all the time.....even on the clean section. (I didn't record the clean, I'll work that in next time)
True, the tone stack doesn't do much (the Treble acts as a "hi-cut" or sorta like a mild "tone" control) but it doesn't matter to me.....it sounds perfect as is, with no need to tweak the stack.
It nails what I was trying to acheive on my "Tweed Overdrive Special" .....getting a good D-style OD without a bunch a fussing with the 2x tonestacks. I can basically just plug in & play!

Oh, and I used the modified PAB lift......68k worked for me.
