QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES

Re: QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES
I like the playing, especially at the end of the 6L6 part. Does it sound like that in the room? Seems like the mids are cancelling, or something. Still, its a nice comparison between the two. Were there any major changes made to accommodate the 6L6s, like OD pot values, PI couplers, or OT?
Re: QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES
[quote="dogears"]Tag, we had Brads TKT on top of the real 183 last month. It was not close. As much as I love Brad and you, the real 183 was head and shoulders more fun to play and better sounding. All in attendance agreed.

While I both love both amps on both their merits
I felt that the Dumble 183 has it all
The TKT Quinn 183 sounds fantastic , But has different Dumble Traits
I love both

Here again is the only true A/B clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jggkxsIiyKI
Brad. Bring the Dumble over and lets do a series of A/B clips with both amps. We will post them blind and see if anyone can tell what is what. If I had heard the slightest difference, I would have flown Shad back out without hesitation. There is simply nothing else left he can do. If you REALLY feel there is, why dont you fly him back out to make needed adjustments to your amp?The differences you are hearing now are those thin sounding Preamp tubes. They kill bottom end, just like the Telefunkens do in mine. Pop in the GEs like the Dumble and my TKT has. You are better off with the stock chinese tubes. Not sure why you would not let me put them in your amp when I was there!!!

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
So let's check if I do understand it right now that your opinion is this:
If you could travel back in time with your TKT #183 6L6 to the day the "Running On Empty" (1st song of Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" record) slide guitar track was recorded with David Lindley using one of his 1st generation ODS amps and your TKT 183 6L6 would have been used by David Lindley for recording the "Running On Empty" slide guitar track instead of one of his two 1st generation ODS amps, then in your opinion the guitar tone of the slide guitar solos on this track would sound
- "very simililar" to those recorded with the 1st generation ODS - at least if David Lindley would have spent enough time to dial in a "very similar" tone with your TKT 183 6L6 and would have used "the guitar and or speakers" that are suited best to get a "very similar" sound in combination with your TKT 183 6L6,
and
- even "better" than the one recorded with the 1st generation ODS - "better" meant by you in the sense of "clearer and just more hi fidelity".
Is this your opinion?
Here again is the original 1st generation ODS recording. The first slide guitar solo starts around 2:00: http://www.songarea.com/mc/2/jackson_browne.html

Hi Mr Dumble,Mr Dumble wrote: I believe if Lindley would have had access to both, he would have chosen the newer amp to use at that time.
I see. So let's check again if I do understand right what your opinion is:
You believe that if at the time when the slide track of the song "Running On Empty" has been recorded David Lindley would have had the choice between your TKT 183 6L6 and his two 1st generation ODS amps he would have prefered to record the slide guitar track of this song with your TKT 183 6L6? Is this your opinion?
Cheers,
Max

My TKT or those early Dumbles?? No question, and it would have sounded WAY better!!

Seriously Max, not meaning to sound nasty, but if you do not understand what I have said by now, I dont think you ever will. I have explained it the best I can.

Re: QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES
There is definately some phasing issues, because the monitors are in the same room as the guitar speakers again.Chris333 wrote:I like the playing, especially at the end of the 6L6 part. I see. Obviously I did understand you right up to know, so let's go ahead:
In this thread here you talk about "new" Dumble ODS amps that in your opinion are "better" than the "old" Dumble ODS amps.
To avoid misunderstandings:
Which of what I call the "generations" of Dumble ODS amps do you call the "old" ODS and which the "new" or "newer" ODS?
Do I understand you right that "old" means "before the introduction of the skyline specs" and "new" means "after the introduction of the skyline specs" (skyline tone stack, precision power supply, "mid" switch instead of "deep" switch etc.)?
Or asked in a different way:
Do you call
the transition generation "classic" ODS amps like this one: http://www.maverick-music.com/vintage-a ... eve-farris
and the 4th generation "classic" ODS amps like this one: http://www.gbase.com/gear/dumble-overdr ... dumbl-hold#
"old" or "new"?
Cheers,
Max

Re: QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES
He pm'd me that he used NFB on V1B, and made the snubbers bigger, but otherwise stayed with the circuit (thanks for the info, Shad).Mr Dumble wrote: There is definately some phasing issues, because the monitors are in the same room as the guitar speakers again.(Same for both amps, good ear!!) As far as the techincal changes, only Shad knows what Shad did. Shad, you around??

I know it's obnoxious to gripe about the sound quality of other people's clips, especially when I don't post any myself, but it would sure be cool to hear some nice hifi recordings of the amp(s)...

Re: QUINN TKT183 6L6 ARRIVES
Thats the way I am hearing it as well. After playing both and really getting the hang of the 6L6, I have to say I like it more for sure. Its straining and flipping notes all over the place, and sounds like its going to blow up at any second! Could be the smoothest amp I have ever played as well. Maybe an amp thats finally smoother than the Emerald Pro.makrisp wrote:Tag,
Luv the 6L6 version. Just sounds that much thicker and a bit cleaner than the El-34 version.
Kudos to Shad!

the first one was pretty good i thought, but I can get them better. I will isolate the speakers again asap. that makes a giant difference. I cant use headphones and get a good tone for some odd reason with these Boss recorders. That means I have to leave the monitors on while I am recording, and the mic always pics up the backing track coming from the monitors since everything is in the same room. Instanty phase issues.

Most (not all) of the ones I have played from the early 80s to very early 90s sound at least pretty good. The newest HRMs I have not liked all that much. The earlier ones I have played sound pretty raw in comparison.
