40W #124 with 2 6L6GC ?

Post by bluescaster »

Hi, i'm new here. I built a 5E3 last year with good result and want to build a clean machine now.

I have 40w weber PT,OT and choke for Super reverb. Is it possible to use it to build a #124 ? I don't need overdrive part, just clean preamp and power amp.

Kind regards.

The iron set you have is perfect for a 40W #124. I suggest that you just build it as per #124 but with 2 power tubes. You may just like the OD also.

Not a bad idea for just one more 12ax7.

Kind regards.

If you're looking to build a clean machine, take a look at the amp described in this post as the 'Clean King'. Haven't built it myself, but it looks very interesting. It's based on the Dumble pentode SSS, or what is currently known of it except that it's roughly 40-50 watts if you use 6L6's.

I have used EF86 in an AC15 build and it does get really beautiful detailed clean tone. Best to build it as a head though. EF86's can be problematic in combos.

Thank you for the link, but i fall in love with ODS clean.

Some questions :

If i build a #124 with just clean preamp, i don't need B+4. So what to do ? keep all parts between B3 and B5 and not use B4 or replace parts to have B2,B3,B5 ?

If i don't want footswitch, can i replace Relay with switch ?

Can i replace 470R 5w with 470R 2W with 40w amp ?

Why use 3w resistor on feedback ? Fender use 1/2 W.

I have a weber choke, "Universal choke. 9H @ 120ma", is it ok for this amp ?

Kind regards.

You'll have a lil' less current draw with one less node so you'll need to adjust your dropping string to dial in the correct voltages on V1.

Your choice. Consider that you might decide to add the OD later, so you might keep the extra supply node, or at least leave space for it and the OD preamp coponents.

Yes.
Can i replace 470R 5w with 470R 2W with 40w amp ?
I'd keep 5W there.
Why use 3w resistor on feedback ? Fender use 1/2 W.
Dumble had reasons for his component choices, but I don't know what those might be in this case. A 1/2-watt resistor is adequate, power dissipation-wise.
I have a weber choke, "Universal choke. 9H @ 120ma", is it ok for this amp ?
It will work, but it is twice as big as the original, and the current draw in your design is ~half as much. This will result in a stiffer supply. 50W Dumbles us the same 4H choke as the 100W, as far as I know.

Here is a link to a fun little clean only, low plate skyliner. ODS minus the OD.

Hi, can i use light capacitors for 40w #124 ODS ? Is it better to copy the ODS 50W third generation power supply for example ?

I like clean strat tone like Mayer, Hendrix, SRV: Skylinner or not ?

Kind regards.
