I think Dumble needs to start sending his cabinet work out to you! That thing rocks!

I'm curious, did you install an inside wall to separate the upper and lower sections of the cabinet? Was it ever intended? Beautiful work!
Jelle built an ODS in black suede that just killed everyone who played it. That seems to be a perfect match for maximum pleasure!

It is beautiful but I worry about no internal post, and please don't split that quad. 2x12 cabs are so boomy! I hate those split Boogie cabs enough to cut the divider out and install a post!

Interesting, I have a split 4x12 Boogie and it is not boomy at all. It's a great sounding cab. Very even
I also have a 2x12 made to the Dumble specs out of pine and it is the boomiest cab I have ever heard. I need to do something about that cab one of these days. It makes the low E string a monster.

Ah, 2x12 is boomy. M/B cab with divider is 2-2x12 cabs. (and stack poorly with Marshalls) heh

Nice wrok man - thats a few hours for sure!
I use mahogany plywood all the time in my builds - its sounds 'svelt and gorgeous' - nice stuff. I get mine at dunn lumber here in seattle."Mahogany" lumber core wood and "Mahogany" plywood had been imported
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds
Re: My quest to build the $25k Dumble double baffle 4x12
The original Dumble 4 x 12" cabinets I'm familiar with have a crossbar between the middle of the front crossbar and the middle of the back crossbar.Reeltarded wrote:It is beautiful but I worry about no internal post
@briane:
Just to avoid misunderstandings: The "Mahogany" lumber core and the "Mahogany" plywood the original Dumble 4 x 12 cabinets I'm familiar with are made of isn't "Mahogany" in a scientific sense. "Mahogany" was (and maybe still is) only the "market-name" under which this kind of lightweight tropical wood growing in Asia has been sold at the time when the original cabinets have been made. AFAIR this rather lightweight "Mahogany" from Asia (Indonesia etc.) used for the construction of the original Dumble 4 x 12" cabinets isn't the same species as Honduras "Mahogany" e.g.
Cheers,
Max

Ahh that makes more sense there. I tune all my 4x12 cabinets with wedges to the back panel end of the posts and in my experience an unrestrained baffle with that much sprung weight and a little lowend sounds as crisp as a swamp.

Is that internal bracing an issue with the 1960A style cabs, or does it also apply to the 1960B style as well? TIA

Both! I pull the right side handle and hammer a wedge in with someone beating the crap out of it with a second cabinet until they are tuned the same and in a particular way. All of a sudden it just kicks ass. Done. The handles get weatherstripping just like the back panels do. Tight and even!

Interesting. I'll have to install a brace between the two crossbars. I'm gonna need to find a couple more EV's before I have a quartet.
I read in another thread that structo researched that indonesian wood and it was on the endangered list.
This Baltic should be pretty dead...but it sure is heavy, the 5/8" baffles and back panels just add to the weight, as do the double edges and added cleats.

I still offer them on the site, in both regular and tall versions. They're made with 5/8" BB3 (furniture grade baltic birch), and 1/2 blind dove tail joints (that interlock) instead of finger joints that can split.amplifiednation wrote: Jim you were selling Marshall style 412s for awhile, weren't you? Are you still? How were those constructed? I've seen enough production ones to backline AC/DC, I'm just curious on the more boutique builds. I know Kerry Wright does a fine 4x12 as well.
And yeah once this is loaded and locked in the back panels its not gonna move. I put in 5/8" baffles. I really don't need this...but I had to do a prototype to get the design to work.
Its too bad I didn't have enough black tolex cause this suede is pricey!!
I'd like to try one fully split into two 2x12s, one with EVs and one half with celestions, or Altecs. We'll see... that will be even heavier with a centerpiece.
There's a couple of other minor but important refinements as well (no details, sorry).
I only use the Marshall coverings (tolex/cloth/piping) and I have my own metal handles that look like the original 60's, but are sized/drilled to fit the 71-present 4x12's.
