Re: Tan Dumble
Well, that show was absolutely outstanding! Almost all tracks were from the new album, two old songs and two new songs.
As an extra treat, Robben took the tan Dumble! I understand it's pretty rare that he takes it abroad.
The support act was a young British bluesy singer songwriter called Tristan Mackay (http://tristanmackay.com/) and he was great, really good voice and not a bad guitar player to boot.
Robben took to the stage at 9pm opening with Everything I Do Gotta Be Funky, the band was very strong from the opening number and they raced through the first few tunes before stopping to take a breath and talk to the crowd. "It's been a while since we've played in the uk..!"
All the songs that followed were from Bringing It Back Home until an up tempo version of You Go Your Way, with Robben filling in for the trombone riff. Robben then launched into his cover of Gabe Ford's song "Too Much" followed by a new song "Cut You Loose".
This was followed by a long version of "Nothing To Nobody" which included an organ, upright bass and drum solo.
Another new song "Different People" which was absolutely awesome! If anyone knows what the origin of this song is I'd be indebted for any information! One last song, Trick Bag closed out the set.
For the encore, two songs, Fool's Paradise and Poor Kelly (Another new one I believe) were great choices.
The band lineup was Robben on guitar and vocals, Tony Moore on drums, Brian Allen on upright bass, and Ricky Peterson on organ.
They were all absolutely excellent but Ricky Peterson in particular blew me away! He was unbelievably soulful.
As for Robben's tone, after a bit of tweaking about with the controls, he dialled it in perfectly. It had that singing sweet sustain and so much top end sparkle without being harsh, I'm probably preaching to the choir to those of you who have heard an actual Dumble but this was my first experience of a Dumble and I'm still in awe. We chatted for a few minutes after the show and he said he just couldn't get his sound without the Dumble anymore. Robben was very pleasant and gracious when i talked to him.
He used two guitars on the night, the Epiphone Riviera which is all over the new album, and a red SG, I'm not sure if it was a Gibson, it looked vintage but the emblem on the headstock wasn't one I'd seen before. I couldn't make out the manufacturer name.
In summary, if you get a chance to see Robben on this tour, i urge you to take it! He was fantastic!
If there's anybody in the Edinburgh area on here, feel free to drop me a line!

Re: Tan Dumble
Matt,
Thanks for the review, it makes me regret missing him this time, even more, knowing that he has his Dumble with him AND the band is cooking!
It's a bit late now to see him in Newcastle tonight!
Cheers,
Paul.

Robben is amazing. One thing is to sound great on a record, that is recorded over a couple of month, another thing is delivering a show with great, great playing. He is amazing.
Saw him last year with "Miles Smiles", where he played a Tele, his new pedal board and a couple of (rental) Fender Super. To my ears, the same great Robben tone.
Impressive how he can manage keeping such a busy scheme. Playing Jazz gigs with "Miles Smiles", Rock with Michael Landau, Fusion with Larry Carlton and his own (Soul) blues. He must rehearsing all day long.
Diva or not? - Respect for Mr. D's work....)

Re: Tan Dumble
I was at the show at Holmfirth Picturedrome on Saturday night.
I have seen Robben many many times now and I must say this show was up there with the best I've ever seen. The new album is so paired back, clean and relaxed and on the night, that is just how the band seemed to be. Lots of space, very relaxed, great tones and great playing.
Robben didn't touch the OD side of the amp all night as far as I could tell, just clean and PAB and the Riviera was excellent through the Dumble. There was more drive apparent in the SG, but that is to be expected.
I've since spoken to a few of my friends who were also at the gig and we all agree it was a very good one.
Cheers,
Rob.

Re: Tan Dumble
Thanks for the reviews!
Although I've seen Robben w a Dumble a handful of times, he usually use a rented Super Reverb or Twin Reverb.
Sounds like a sweet concert. I missed him this time.
I believe the SG is an old 63 SG Special.
It now has 2 humbuckers but the headstock has been repaired and now has a '30s L-5 'The Gibson" Veneer on it.
