Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
I have a sticker on my ass that's stamped FI. It's rather faded and worn and tattered and stained, but you can still read it if you look real close.
Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
The RF Jing Chi ODS clip has a 68pf bright cap on the master. Just this alone will make a big difference in the OD tone vs. no bright cap. Adding the cap and using the D lator changes the character of the OD quite a bit.

I think I'm going to first try a 47pf cap. And if I want more brightness, then I'll try the 68pf - although I think the 47 should be fine.JHP wrote:The RF Jing Chi ODS clip has a 68pf bright cap on the master. Yes, good place to experiment.
However, the higher you have the master volume turned up, the less effect that bright cap has on the tone.
Try to set the master for the tone you like (around 12:00-2:00).
Then control the volume with the Dumbleator.

That's what I've been doing - MV around noon or so. And I use the Dumbleator as a master volume.Structo wrote:Yes, good place to experiment.

But that raises another question. The cleans on the amp are very dark, not bright at all. I know these amps are supposed to have kind of a Fendery clean.
Other than the bright cap on the MV, what else do I need to do to get the cleans to sound brighter?

Greg, Here's an interesting thread that relates to that subject.
I'm a 1957 model.

'52 here.
Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
Yes check out the Bright on Clean mod in that thread.
It really helps the clean channel brightness.
It does require another relay.
Also the bright switch will need to be a On-Off-On.
I think I have a 120pf cap on mine.

Yes, I just read that thread where you talked about a 120pf cap and the on-off-on switch. I will definitely look into that.Structo wrote:Yes check out the Bright on Clean mod in that thread.

Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
Would that be an SPDT or DPDT switch?Structo wrote:Also the bright switch will need to be a On-Off-On.
(As I mentioned in my first post, I'm new at this stuff. I have no electronic background. I'm just trying to learn about these amps so I can do some mods to mine.)
Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
If the amp does not have a bright cap try running the master on the amp a bit lower 2-3, and the drive on the lator higher around 11:00That's what I've been doing - MV around noon or so. And I use the Dumbleator as a master volume.

I found this increased the highs without having to turn on the bright switch.
Tubes can make a difference also. With the bright cap in I think JJ's sound good but with no bright cap I like brighter tubes like an EH.
The length of cables between the amp and the Lator will affect overall brightness quite a bit. With no bright cap try running short 2' cables.
With bright cap in 7-8' sounds about right.
I find it's always somewhat of a challenge to get the right balance of smooth OD and bright enough cleans.

Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
greg54, that would indeed be a SPDT switch. But it must specifically be an ON/OFF/ON type.
Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
JHP: Yeah, I don't like JJ preamp tubes. Too dark for me. I usually use EH, but I currently have NOS in my Dumble clone. As for cables, I believe I'm using either 5 or 6 ft. cables. It had a 10pf cap on the MV. I just put in a 47pf cap. I'll try it out today and see how it sounds.
