I recalling reading that Larry Carlton doesn't use a foot switch - that he just leaves the amp in OD and controls everything else from the guitar. Is that true?briane wrote:Most people I know dial in the amp, then use the guitar volume to go between crunchy and smooth, lound and mellow, etc...and just click the footpedal OD when needed for leads - It should be a very simple amp to play - and you shouldnt have to mess with the amp controls in the middle of a song to change the sound palette.

Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
Everyone has an opinion. And that's fine. What I hear and like is different from what others hear and like. But what I have learned is, just because someone disagrees with your opinion doesn't make that person wrong - or that they don't use a Dumble "correctly."
Offering suggestions is fine. I welcome them. But if someone prefers to do it differently - or hears things differently - there shouldn't be any judgment or argument.
Just my 2 cents . .

I seem to recall dogears (Scott L) rarely rolled his volume back from 10if you aint using the volume knob on the guitar, then you aint using a dumble correctly....IMO

Agreed. Guitar tone controls really take a sledgehammer to a good chunk of the instrument's range. They're completely useless to me - the amp has a tonestack for a reason! I work my volume control when playing amps like Trainwrecks, but I'm not really a fan of the extra treble loss when playing a Dumble.Guitarman18 wrote:briane wrote:

No.I recalling reading that Larry Carlton doesn't use a foot switch - that he just leaves the amp in OD and controls everything else from the guitar. Is that true?
He uses the footswitch for both clean and OD and also uses a dumble modded showbud volume pedal to control volume and gain. He may also use the guitar volume knob.
I have read the opposite, that he only uses the clean channel and PAB and no OD channel, this is false as well.
Recent gig where you can hear LC turn the OD on and off as well as use the volume pedal to clean up on the OD channel.

In another video that I can't find at the moment Larry does talk about how he likes to setup his amps so they optimize touch sensativity so that when he plays light it's cleanish and when he digs in it growls more.
Here it is, found it.

In this video Larry says nothing about using his guitar knobs. He uses pick sensitivity only.JHP wrote: In another video that I can't find at the moment Larry does talk about how he likes to setup his amps so they optimize touch sensativity so that when he plays light it's cleanish and when he digs in it growls more.

That's correct. In this video Larry says nothing about using his guitar knobs. He uses pick sensitivity only.
Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
I mentioned it because someone said that unless you use your guitar knobs, you weren't using a Dumble "correctly." So I was just pointing out the obvious.

Thanks for typing that....I've been lurking and trying to figure out exactly what to build next,,,and I've never really thought of it like that (even though it's kinda obvious).......more big tubes = more big toneStructo wrote:Greg, my first D style amp, if you can call it that, was a 2x 6L6 Brown Note D'lite 44 kit.
I learned a lot on that amp about tuning and tweaking the circuit with the great help offered here.
Many guys here recommended that I build a 100w ODS amp because there is just something about four 6L6GC tubes, even at lower volume.
There is just "more" tone with four 6L6's to use one adjective.
In this case, more is better.
But I thought, I don't need a 100 watt amp because they are just too loud.
Well when you double the power from 50 watts, you only gain a 6db increase in volume.
So I built one and I can totally agree with what they told me.
This is the perfect amp for me.
And a very versatile amp depending where you set the knobs.
There is just more "tone".
It sounds bigger/ fuller, even at lower volumes.
Most of the time I play at louder bedroom levels.
I know when I have exceeded the "house volume" levels when my wife yells at me.![]()
I had crossed 100 watt amps off of the to do list and never looked back.......hmmmmmm
Sorry about the late quote,,,,,but I just woke up and realized I haven't built an ODS yet

Re: chewy notes on D-style amps
With these amps it's not about Power or volume..It's all about CURRENT!!.

Thank you Tony
