John Mayer with a Dumbleland?

Post by halfbackstrat »

Just saw this posted over on the mystupidmouth John Mayer forum (credit to hkmayerfan for posting these)

It would appear Mr Mayer has replaced his SSS (perhaps temoprarily) with a Dumbleland, anybody know the story on this amp?

That's AWESOME!!...If it is in fact the famous Velvet Glove amp..Glad to hear John has it and it's getting some stage time..Much rather see it being used by a well known player than collecting dust somewhere!!

How do we know he owns it? I am sure he has the means, but not every seller is stupid to let go of an investment. It can be on loan. Hell Bonamassa even has a 59 on loan. From a guy who wants it to be played but like to keep the property on his name.

Looks like this amp was recently for sale. A shop in japan had it.

Will be interesting to see if this amp replaces mayers SSS#4 as his main amp.

Shimamura music had this amp and it was indeed for sale. They are a huge music retailer in Japan with over 140 locations.

Is the tone expander any different from the High/Low Cut on an SSS?

I too had heard that the Velvet Glove was for sale a while back...It does't surprise me that John picked it up, being such a BIG SRV fan and knowing the amps history and being the famous Flood amp..AFAIK..The tone expander is just what he labeled the Hi Low fitter section on the very early Dumbleands..

My guess would be that he will use the D-land to honeymoon with for a while...Then use it on mostly session work and possibly some high profile gigs and depending on the logistics/Tour schedule and where it goes would determine how often he uses it in his live shows.. I also heard from a reliable source that he has had his 002 SSS cloned and uses it mostly on the road now instead of the original 002..Perhaps he might do the same with the D-Land..Why take the chance on having it lost ,stolen or damaged on an a typical tour..Just have another one made that's close...

That's not a very inspiring tone in this video, IMO. I honestly was wondering if it was a spoof the first 30 sec into it?

You have to give the guy points--he got just as shitty a sound out of a $50 profiling amp as he did out of a $30000 Dumble.
Not as easy as he makes it look.
