I was using a Klon clone as a buffer and it worked quite well. Don't like it quite so much with the 102, but sounds very well with Bluesmaster and SSS.

Do you guys prefer discrete transistor buffer circuits with one or two transistors, or using an opamp or other more exotic devices?

Is one more quiet than the other?

To my ears the Cornish buffer sounds the same as plugging my guitar straight into the amp when using the pedal board. If I don't use the buffers I get some tone loss from going through the 4 pedlars I have between the guitar and front of the amp, the eventide/alter ego and HOF are all in the loop.

I think the buffer in the Klon is great and a reason people like them in their chain, whether they realise it or not.


I've been using this pedal board for a while now and I like it with everything. To me it sounds pretty transparent regardless of what it goes in to. I was using AC30's on the road recently and it worked fine. Back in the studio I've been using it with my 102 and my Marshall JTM45 with 4x10 Celestion cab and it works well for me with them. I don't use any of the OD/Boost pedals with the 102 but there always there in line on the board hence the buffers

I've got a passive fx loop in the JTM45 so I can use the dumbleator as well with that if I choose. Obviously the JTM will OD the phase inverter/master section more than the dumbly type amps in the loop but it's still nice to have the option of a loop.

I prefer the TL072 Opamp Buffer circuit also used in the Klon Buffer, I built a buffer into a Goodrich passive volume pedal thats internally voltage doubled at 18v.

I've been using an Eventide H9 max in a buffered fx loop with a TC HOF Mini mixed in parallel using an RJM Mini line mixer. Using a MusicomLab midi switcher on my pedal board to control the H9 both in the loop and in front of the amp. The H9's A/D, D/A converters are great and they don't color the sound enough for me to notice. I mix it in parallel in the loop to stop any congestion that may occur with multiple effects being mixed in simultaneously. Other than some minor high end loss from 40ft of cable in the loop I have everything on a small pedalboard with a few drive & modulation pedals.

I've compared a BB preamp and a Timmy pedal and I prefer the Timmy for transparency and function. It allows me to be able to cut either bass or treble and add just a touch of OD. (or more if I choose). For me the Timmy, worked very well when used with a "clean" amp.

Hello, I am still finding something different about how pedals respond going in the front end of the Dumble circuit as opposed to a Fender amp. Dirt pedals sound cleaner through the Dumble. I am starting to wonder about the effect of the LNFB with regards to pedals through the front end.

OK, so I did an experiment. I grounded out the LNFB and turned the master all the up and the preamp down low. I then tried various overdrive pedals and they, to my ears, sound way better and the way I am used to hearing them. This gets me thinking about maybe adding a LNFD defeat switch if I find myself using the Dumble circuit with an overdrive pedal in the front end rather than the OD in the amp. However, I do really care for no LNFB using the amp's OD.

Or a relay switch on/off grounding the lnfb between the LNFB cap and 22Mresistor?

OK I'm in, I just ordered the Cornish clone kit to fit in under my Pedaltrain(s). It's going in a tiny ABS project box. I took your and bandmate Tom's lead on the HOF reverb and I am really pleased with it. That is at the end of the board, buffer on, so this will go at the front of the chain. Thanks for the heads up on these
