Bluesmaster sounds dull when OD master is above 5, help
Yesterday I played an outdoor gig so I ran my amp hotter than usual, clean gain about 10:00, OD gain 10:00 OD master 1:00. It sounded dull and muted on OD.
Today I hooked it up in the house, with my more typical setting of OD master at about 10:00 it sounded great, so I put in the cans and cranked it. All the life went out of it. When the OD Master went above noon it was like a dull switch was turned on.
It makes sense that with a bright cap you'd lose some highs cranked but this was extreme.
Any thoughts on a fix?

Bummer, man. If it was extreme, I would assume a faulty component or oscillation.

I've tried different tubes, but I haven't looked for oscillation, good point. I'll also look for leaky caps and check the resistors but I don't expect to find anything there.Smokebreak wrote:Bummer, man. If it was extreme, I would assume a faulty component or oscillation.
I thinking that there's some way that the bright cap on the clean master is in the circuit shunting some highs to ground. I'm going to remove the bright caps and see if it impacts this issue.

Is the tone suck variable from 10p - cranked?
No snubbers on the plates?

I'm not sure what you meanSmokebreak wrote:Is the tone suck variable from 10p - cranked?
No snubbers on V2, just the one 47pF snubber on the PI.No snubbers on the plates?
I'm not seeing any obvious oscillation watching the scope. I've had this amp maybe 5-6 years and I've never seen or heard oscillation. I can't ever remember running it this loud either (we didn't have a solid PA to support us) so this problem may not be new.

I was wondering if the dulling effect has variable level between the MV setting you usually play, and the MV cranked.
That PI should explode when let loose. Can you make an audio clip?

Yes, that's exactly what's happening. I have always found the sweet spot on all my D Style amps is with the master at about 11:00, this one included. It was only when I needed to crank up to 2:00 or so, and that was LOUD, that it got dull.Smokebreak wrote:I was wondering if the dulling effect has variable level between the MV setting you usually play, and the MV cranked.

It also could be the speaker, I haven't tried another yet.

Could totally be the speaker. What is it?

Hellatone 60, V30 broken in by Avatar. A tad underrated for this amp.Smokebreak wrote:Could totally be the speaker. What is it?

I may be barking up the wrong tree. I pulled the bright caps and connected to another cab. Same thing, and on both clean and OD.
I run digital effects in the loop from an HD500. I always have and it sounds great. But now I think this is causing the issue. I could be pushing the input of the HD500 too hard. When I take it out of the loop the problem goes away. The HD500 is set for line level and has a buffer but still it seems to be a problem when pushed too hard.
I have a Suhr mini mix but when I put it in the loop the volume drops.
The frustration of these great amps is using effects with them.

I am guessing you are not using a dumblater with your rig? Does your effects processor have input and output level controls - or perhaps a -10bB / +4dB switch?
