Great!! Glad it was not a bad cap. I've had internal shorts in caps act the same way! Yours was obviously external
Btw. How does the amp compare side by side with the 183?
Close not so close??
Tony
Tony,
I have never played 183 or heard it live (only YouTube videos) so I can't offer a comparison. 183 sounds like a really special amp. Mine sounds good to me and hopefully will get better with more mileage.

Nice looking amp Ian, I'm glad you got it up and running.
Have a look at the plate lead in the picture; double check to make sure that conductor isn't exposed.
Thanks UltraHookedOnPhonix. The insulation is still intact. Changing out the grid stopper multiple times using solder wick caused that I did make sure it was good though. Good catch

Rock on. I have a horror story regarding something similar: I was stripping some preamp board wires on my BM clone using one of those hand-held tools with an "onboard" clipper (it simultaneously actuates with the stripper). Unbeknownst to me, two cathodes wires and a plate wire got caught in the clipper while I was stripping some other wire. A minute or two later I remember thinking, why the hell did I install such short cathode leads? That was a nightmare-redo as the board was already installed and partially soldered. Good thing it wasn't a finger caught in there instead, right?
my 2c on quickly narrowing probs is to SHORT the stages ala in clean mode first, then od, just go to coupling caps to ground ( AUDIO SIDE! ) , IF doing this on ALL stages of preamp inc tonestack doesnt do it, ..........ur alot further ahead alot faster.....after this i go to scope..
