Anybody know what amp(s) Robben used on the Inside Story record? That one sounds a bit like the Yamaha.

Yep, back then Robben played with a mission, both in the Yellowjackets, and his short stint with Miles. That whole blues thing destroyed that fire,in his playing, unless you consider how many blues fans there are vs 'jazz' fans. He had to sell records.

totally agree with this ... But Robben is Robben and , even if I am listening him really less, I can 't really stop : always waiting for those "special licks" that he has the secret

Not me, far too few gtr players ever strive to play that kind of stuff, let alone achieve it, it's a betrayal of his jazz fans, and to his own music legacy, pure and simple, when he had it, all along.

I would agree with this!. I thought the Miles gigs were predominately blues-based with plenty of altered ideas fused in which he started doing back in the Charlie Musslewhite days and expanded on it with the Jackets/ then Miles. I definitely wouldn't consider him a Jazz player in the traditional sense. I remember him saying he did not like sound of traditional Jazz GuitarsCharlie Wilson wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 1:48 amHuh,when was Robben Ford not a blues player? In fact, when was he ever a Jazz player? Sure he can play over some changes and knows some of the altered stuff the jazz guys use but his phrasing has always been more blues than jazz.(even with Miles Davis)

I remember to have read a Robben interview decades ago where he said that he has started his career in Jazz, wished to be a Jazz guitar player ... but quickly understand that he didn't gain a lot of money ... compared to his Blues sessions in studio ... and so he swap to blues ...
Of course after all these decade, difficult for me to find this interview for you
But, anyway, it's probably a chance : I really like Robben playing and it's probably coz of this mix of blues with some jazzy licks

They did the Charles Ford band blues record in 1972 and Robben was 21 years old. So I'm not sure how young he was when his "jazz" career started and ended.
