want to build an ODS clone with true SRV sound, need advice

Post by Mark427 »

Hello,

I am new, I was owner of a Mystique amp tuned for that SRV "Texas flood tone", this jewel amp is today sold and I have never heard an other amp capable of that amazing tone. My plan today is to built a dumble clone to re capture that sound. On this forum, I have listen a lot of people who play essentially "fusion" or "cool rock" like Robben Ford and I agree the ODS do it superbly but I am looking for the texas tone killer, like a big fender on steroids with a lot of headroom just like the youtube clip when Alexander Dumble plays his "Low down" tune, this deep fat clear tone is my holy grail. My questions are:
- A full schemes of the #124 is available, is able this to do this tone (SRV)? If not ,what your advice for me and what style of Dumble circuitry you recommend?
- If not, could anyone tell me the change to do in the # 124 (or other accuratly available) circuitry in the Dumble way to get the tone I am looking for?

- Who build accurate chassis and Dumble face plate 80's style?
- If someone can post a clip of his ODS clone build with the schemes available here, I am interrested to hear the tone, if it's in the texas shuffle style with a strat,it's far better

- Any other solutions? I have a very skilled old amp tech who can build it but I want to be sure I will make the right choice of amp and sure the value and components are accurate.

Regards

Mark

I'll try to help a bit, then let schmarter people answer the rest:

1) Can you give us a link or a good description of this Mystique amp? I'm not familiar with the brand.
2) How much power -- 50 or 100W?
3) Which output tubes -- 6L6GC, EL-34, or other?
4) What speaker(s) got you your grail tone...open back, closed back?

Periodically, Brendon aka Funkaliciousgroove, has 80's style amp chassis/board sets available. Iirc, he can also provide transformers and a choke.

Thank you,

The amp was build by Mr E. Jonhson, you can googled Mystique amp in sweden, infos are very rare because amp are rare but magic.

It's a 75w 2x6550 Svetlana, 2x 12ax7 and 1x12at7 nOS philips.

These amps are no longer available today. Tommy cougar build other models, expensive but they are true Rolls Royce also!!

Mark, how many inputs to the amp? Was there more than one channel...like a Bright channel and Normal channel?

I could only find one pic and it looks like an ODS clone.

I don't know anything about the SSS but it seems to me you could get close if not dead-on to an SRV tone with just the clean channel of an ODS (played loud of course). If I had to guess I would think an ODS that was designed to have an SRV-like clean tone and then have the OD tone be very similar to the clean just bigger/dirtier (but still not very dirty) would be the ticket.

You want SRV tone... Cesar Diaz set SRV up with low guitar output and a low gain preamp. Turn the preamp up to get power tube distortion.

Aha! I get the message; " You Must Be Logged-In to do That!" and that ain't happenin'. It seems every site these days wants you to register and remember a userID/password and I don't want to have to remember a bazillion different userIDs/passwords so I just avoid all of them except a handful...my loss.

Although SRV might have used the Dumble in sessions and occasionally on stage, I think he is best know for playing through his Vibroverbs, Twin Reverbs and a Marshall with a Tubescreamer.
Add to the equation .013 strings tuned 1/2 step low, and a heavy hand most of the time.
Plus HUGE hands.
There is a lot more to his sound than simply one amp.
All IMHO

if you arn't SRV you will never get his sound... tone is in the hands and soul not in the amp:) I have seen so many amps sound like crap.. then someone plays on it and its magic... its all in the player:)

So should a fan of a certain artist sound build or not build a amp that that certain artist play's :?: I know the tone has alot to do with the hands and feel of the player' but if someone is asking about a amp to get closer (Like I have done many times) to a artist's he likes, I would think they should go for it.Not because I think they will sound like SRV or whoever but I'm sure it will get em a little closer. The main reason I got into amp building is to sound closer to my heroes (BTW It only helped a little) but still to know I may have amp's similar makes me feel closer  This of course is my opinion YMMV. I think Icetech Johnson's right about Structo Johnson bein' right.

But seriously, I understand that no one sounds like SRV but SRV. And no one sounds just like Robben Ford except Robben Ford, but that hasn't stopped a 100+ page thread on TGP about it or several of the most esteemed posters on this forum from spending hundreds of hours tweaking to nail his sound.

Like many reading this thread, I got into this whole Dumble thing lagrely because I loved the SRV sound. I've rebuild my ODS several times with different configurations, one of which did a decent impersination of the Tightrope sound. I've never been able to quite get that sizzle on the highs, though.

Do you know if the Mystic have CF drivers after the PI?
