Hi Tim,

It would be great if we could have more information about this wonderful amplifier.

Hugs.

I would also love to get more info on this amp.
One thing I noticed right away is how this amp has some breakup on the clean channel.
Maybe his pickups are a little hot?
Maybe he is running EL34s?

Cheers

Its an Ultra-Phonix preamp!!
He is running a 350 - 350 power supply.

I really want to build this one, but too busy right now.
I didnt know the Ultra Phonix preamp was built into an Overdrive Special amp.
I know Carlton loves the low plate sound so wonder if thats what is going on for the Overdrive channel.

By answering some of my questions I now have more questions to answer LOL.
Someone has to build this!

Preamp and Master volumes are turned way up as well. Who knows what's in that amp, but it sounds great.

It's for sale, looks like it's actually running 6L6's.

Thanks, yes looks like 6L6 in the back and 3 preamp tubes like a regular ODS.
If I was to build it I would use the normal preamp from here:

I don't think I am hearing a low plate hear but something a little bit higher and the 180k/130k plates in the attachment above may sound right.
I need to research what this Carlton Overdrive channel is.
This amp definitely has some grit happening.
I think a nice dose of Kiwame plate resistors could really bring out the required sound.

Thanks Gil for spotting the Volume and Master cranked.

Maybe others that have built this preamp can chime in with their thoughts.

Thanks
Guy

As far as the dirtier than normal clean channel, is it possible there’s a Ripper circuit in there? I also noticed in the listing that there are pics of Carlton’s settings.

Yes you could be correct. I attached a schematic shared a while back here by Talbany for the Ripper. I like that the plates are 110k/130K on this schematic. I much prefer the sound of amps with plates in this range.
I also noticed the slope resistor is 47k like the other Ultraphonix schematic I posted and the PI tail values (510 ohm & 10k) is also similar. This is also a 3 tube preamp like Santana's #178.

It’s a Ripper with Musicman power supply.

Thanks Charlie!
Its amazing how this circuit shows up over the years in Dumble's amps. People must have liked it a lot.
Yes I was thinking it was Musicman trandsformer as well and not the 350 0 350 transformer I noted before.

This #178 has beautiful sustain.

Tony, probably close, #189 was Stephan Bruton’s amp and he liked a Skyline tone stack.
