Why not try the cathode driver (as in some SSS circuits)? Or at least make a comparison of the two.

I only have 1/2 of a 12AX7 available, otherwise I would.
I also would like to keep this simpler than my ODR; a traditional Bassman only uses 4 preamp tubes and that's a fun design restriction to keep.

Re: The Tartan Suit - 60W Ripper Design
I have now successfully made it out of the pool and into the ocean.
I'm not really sure this falls under the Dumble-style umbrella anymore, maybe "inspired by" is most fitting.
Regardless, schematic attached. There is now a footswitchable Crunch mode added to the Clean channel.
So now we have Clean (Dumble ODS), Crunch (Ultraphonix Plexi), and Overdrive (Ultraphonix 2203 cascade).
Channel switching logic is handled by a CD4049 and some diodes. Supply for the isolators (9 total
) is taken from the PT 5V filament winding.
I may officially be pushing the upper limits of what a Bassman tube compliment can do, so I don't see any more circuit additions happening, but that may be a good thing at this point.

Majority of the parts are now ordered. Have to design the chassis, and then will probably contract Ceriatone for the fab like with the ODR.
I also have to design the power supply boards... probably the least fun part of any project.

Hi moonlighter,
can you use this file? it was sent to me by a generous guy from TAG.

Thank you Franco! I'll be adding these to my library.
I'm going to have the second tonestack controls on the outside though, so I'll have to use an SSS sized chassis with 9 knobs on the front

Hi moonlighter,
I used the chassis and frontplate and rearplate bought from Nick once, who is always kind and helpful. The chassis is perfect while the two plates are printed on a very thin plastic, a bit too much for my faults.
I usually buy these things from erwin-ve, frusciante(AAElectronics for the boards), Taylor from Amplified Nation, Rootz and a few others.

Chassis is drawn up, will verify and send the drawing to Nik tomorrow.
I've decided to go for a lay-down Dumbleland look, with a 23.75" width chassis, similar to an ODR.
I also think I'll paint the front and back panels (like I used to for pedals) and ink transfer the lettering.
OD150WX for reference:

Re: The Tartan Suit - 60W Ripper Design
Accumulated most of the components needed now, just some odds and ends left. Updated schematic labeled with what I actually purchased is attached.
I've also changed the standby switch to a Merlin Blencowe approved variant. This is better for the life of the switch and offers a "soft start" for the rectifier diodes. For the cost of two extra components, I thought it was worthwhile.
Chassis is on its way from Ceriatone. My next steps are to design some panel artwork and layout the PCB for the channel switching logic.

Hi Moonlighter,
I'm following your project and I'm starting to not understand what you want to do.
In any case I'm waiting for you to have built the amplifier and posted a demo.
Thanks
Franco

Re: The Tartan Suit - 60W Ripper Design
Hey Franco,
What I'm going for here is a 3 channel Ripper type amp. Our main circuit is a Marshall 2203, but we add a Dumble Skyliner preamp in front. With the switching from the foot pedal, we will have an ODS clean sound, a crunchy Plexi sound, or a high gain JCM800 sound.
The Dumble EQ can be left on with all three channels, or it can be turned off for Crunch and Overdrive modes respectively.
So this is something new, but made from combining old ideas. Hope this helps to understand.

hello moonlighter,
thanks, I'll wait for a demo before I try to build one, I've learned over the years that each ear leads to different conclusions.
With respect.

I'm flattered that you were willing to build along with me!
This is a new design, and it's expiremental in nature, I don't expect anyone to follow my test bench. Ultimately I only know how I plan for it to perform; and planning only gets us so far

I'll be updating this thread through the build, and will provide soundbytes as soon as it's plugged into a speaker.

Re: The Tartan Suit - 60W Ripper Design
Happy New Year all!
Chassis from Ceriatone arrived. Excellent work as usual. Pics attached.
I sized my PT cutout a few .001" too small and will have to work it with a file, but that's nobody's fault but my own.
Next step is polishing the panels and lettering followed by clearcoat. I was going to paint them black originally, but I'm not equipped to do white letter setting.
