6V6 Dumble Input

Post by guitarpkr76 »

Hey, folks. I'm going to be starting a new Dumble build within the next month or so. I'm going to do a 2x6V6 build. I was looking for input from people that have done similar builds. Any certain preamp versions you prefer with 6V6? Any other things you ran into during the build? Any layouts/schematics you'd like to share? Thanks for any input!

My two cents. I built a 6V6 amp with the #124 preamp and it was ok but in IMO it just didn’t have it in the power and tone department. May have just been my build though.

I have an old Brown Note D'Lite 22/33 with 4K/8K primary taps on the output transformer that runs 6V6 or 6L6. Basically a high plate skyline. It works fine either way. The 6L6 sounds better to my ear, but that's just a personal preference.

In my own builds I like using a 6.6K primary OT similar to an Express. I find that I can run a variety of different tubes through it without any problems and clearly hear how each set of tubes lends its character to the sound.

I would suggest looking at something like a 35W OT and size the PT to give yourself some flexibility so that you can run 6V6 but you aren't painted into a corner with them.
