Marsh Amps Overlord

Post by Smokebreak3 »

I'm a bit jaded I'll admit when I get D-style stuff in for repairs. Most of the clones sound generic, for lack of a better term. Not bad, Just nothing noteworthy..... I think we've all been around enough of these to know when you get a special one.
This Marsh I have here in front of me is definitely one of those. After the repair , I fired it up and was blown away.
Now I'm not the usual type of player that tends to gravitate towards these D amps. I'm not looking for singing OD, more straight roots stuff, which is why I've gravitated to the earlier D-style circuits, notably the 2nd and 3rd gen low plate stuff. I'm never after distortion from the preamp , and live in that "on the edge " of breakup world. So basically what I call Blackface plus.
Anyways, this amp does that for me in spades, so much so that I actually traced it out, and (mostly) built it into my homebrew lowplate amp that I swore I'd never touch ;)

The gist is that its a 6l6 amp, built into a Deluxe reverb chassis. The vibrato input is straight up AB763 from stem to stern. The normal channel input is straight up 102, but there are some twists.
After the ratio pot (which IS the MV for this channel, no 1M MV after it, and has a 470p bright cap), there's another 150K series .02 which feeds the 3M3/10p, so it has reverb and trem, and ultimately goes through 5 gain stages before the PI.
The internal 100k trimmer is set 78K to ground, and both the 100k OD and Ratio pots are audio taper, which makes much more sense if your not looking for dirt tones. Way easier to dial in.
Again, the PI is straight BF/SF, 12at7 and all, 8ohm 820r NFB, .001 entrance, etc) There is no 220k divider before PI (just series 220K), but there is the 50K trem loading pot . Speaker is a Red White and Blues!

I put this in my 50W D style homebrew w a Eminence Allesandro, and it kills, even without the 5th stage. Super punchy and easy to dial in edge of breakup sounds.
I emailed Mike to see if he has any extra boards layin around. Kudos Marsh Amps

To me the “on the edge of break-up” is what the D tone is about, at least that’s what got people to sit up and take notice (even though there is a wide range of tones available). I’d love to see the schematic for this, much easier to see what’s different about it with respect to the usual low plate formula.

Yea Martin, if I can get an amp to stay pretty clean, and sustain for days, all those extra triodes are worth it.
I should have been more clear, this one had high plates. The reverb was crazy good too on the ODS channel. I was surprised, and dumbfounded I'd never seen it implemented this way. That 5th stage is just the reverb recovery but of course also the reason why we usually plug into the vib input on a normal Fender ;) The filtering was thin too. I'll try and come up with a drawing

Best I can do given time, but it's all there.
