Best Output Transformer for 50W 2 X 6L6 and 2 x EL34

Post by herby660 »

Hi Guys

Re Output transformers, is there a preferred type for the 50W version non-HRM and HRM . I would like one with 16ohm taps. Not sure whether to go 6L6 or EL34 at present.

There is mention of the Dynaco OD-50 and the Mercury Tweed Bassman 59 OT but someone spoke to Mercury and apparently they recommended the 59 Tweed Bassman

Any feelings on the best to go for. Some guys I notice have the Prosonic too.

The reason I ask about the best for EL34 too is that I have some Mullard EL-34's from 1957 in an old Leak amp . These are supposed to be the holy grail tubes and thought it would be nice to give them a new lease of life.

Having said that I am loving TAD 6L6WGC short 6L6's. What a cheap great sounding tube.

Hey

Thanks for that. The A-470 is that the Ultra Linear..I have an old transformer from a Leak audio amp which is ultra linear .I wonder if that would be suitable. It supplied 2 old Mullard EL34's which are actually Philips valves from 1957, which owned Mullard at the time. I dated these and it turns out these are the most sought after EL-34's of all time. They have the metal collar bottoms.

My dad was a lecturer in electronics here in the UK but worked closely with Mullard and has given me a number of old Mullard valves he had including this old leak amp.

I am after the best sound I can afford as the OT is so critical I am just checking out the best options.

Sure, it is 4300 p/p so with a 440V supply you would get about 45W RMS. I may have to try one sometime.

Yes like I have mentioned the Prosonic transformer works very well.
Although I have not tried EL34's.

It seems the A-470 Dynaco or clone is the popular one

Mercury Magnetics do a Dynaco OD-50, presume this is similar to the A-470 clone by Triode but big difference in price

Is the Triode one good?

The exchange rate is killing us here in the UK so any saving would be great

If i were you, i'd pop that Leak tranny in there and be done with it...

Leak made quality hi-fi.

I'm big on using what i have on hand...

My choice of OT

Post by stubbyfex »

I've really been enjoying the tone of the Hi-Fi Hammond 1600 series transformers. I have used their 60 watt, 6.6k version in several amps. Yes it does have the UL screen taps. In a Marshall style amp, I even added a switch for using the UL taps or the regular screen resistors and power cap. In all honesty I could not tell any change in tone. I am able to hear more bass with those Hi-Fi versions. I spoke with Mercury Magnetics about their low end response, and they said it was 70 Hz. This was on their A470 clone, which the original one went nearly 20hz-20Khz. I find that un-acceptable. A clone should be a clone! The low string on a guitar is about 65 hz, and on a 4 string bass about 40 hz. Bottom line: The hammond transformers are rated usually 20-20K at full power, which to me is as good as it gets.

I was looking into it and the Leak trannie is only rated for 10 to 15W so would be unsuitable. It would saturate too early

Is the triode Dyna Clone A470 the one.. It is a good price and a close clone however am I right in saying Dumble used Mercury Magnetics

Spoke to Mercury they recommend a Bassman OT (Tweed 59 tone clone)

In their words "Our FO50BM-16 sounds best for the 50 watt "

Comments any one....

Heyboer is what I got, for 50W. They are 4k primary, for 2x EL34, and full freq. response at full power; US$85. Good service, custom made OT's, nice.
