Thanks guys!
dogears wrote:Jonas, the real 183 had the Jan Phillips 12AX7WA short plates in it. Nice strong ones testing NOS.

These sound totally different than the tubes you used. I'd suggest grabbing some GE shortplates to hear the circuit the way 183 is tubed (at least now).

Tubes similar are the old Sylvania short plates with square getter, GE short plates with halo, and of course the JAN Phillips which seem to be the same as the GE with halo.

Not the Sylvania long grey plates. Avoid these. They are also sometimes labeled JAN.
Thanks for the tube info. I must to confess, I’m such a blueberry with the NOS thing but maybe this serves as a good introduction. I see Doug’s Tubes and The Tube Store each sell the JAN ones for $50 a pop. These are the 12AX7WA you are referring to right?

You are without doubt the Michaelangelo of the amp chassis! Those pix should be in a textbook! They would have been 60 years ago!

I agree with Dogears, step out a bit with some nice NOS! I know it's not historically correct but I would love to know how some Heerlen Amperex 12AX7s or RCA blackplate 12AX7s sound in that amp. #183 with a buffered loop is on my list, I have a four tube 1/8" chassis in stock and a nice blonde head w/brown Vox grille just yearning for a nice amp!.

Very nice build.
I have the same PT as yours, but my unloaded voltage came in about 25 volts lower.
I never did understand why, I had to put a 1k power resistor in place of the 3k 10watt in order to get my preamp voltages right.

Ha Ha! You’re being very nice David, I’m humbled. Heck, I would’ve been stoked if you said Jackson Pollock!
Cool, that you got the 4 tube chassis. I should have, but I was on the fence if I could implement the loop correctly.
BTW, Is there a good reference or book around for researching NOS tubes?

Thanks! Hey, as long as it’s reliable and sounds good right?

Thanks Chip! Yeah, saw your thread and I wondered about that too. I was not thrilled about the prospect of going in there and yanking the 3K out after everything was installed but to my surprise the B+ was higher than yours. The only things that are different with how you wired your PT is that you used the heater CT instead of the 150R virtual ground resistors and that the relay power secondaries are taped-off in favor of an auxiliary relay PT. These two things surely can't be of concern though. The only other thing I could think of is your line voltage, brand of tubes and your bias setting. I’m still wondering about that though.

Thanks Tony! And thank you for a STELLAR 183 layout. Your layouts are so good that at this point the D-man himself is probably cobbling something together from one of em’. Oh no! Blasphemy!!!
Yep, I sprinkled some Q-line goodness in select spots. Ebay ma friend! I simply searched for “Sprague resistors”, they pop up every once in a while. Let’s have a good bidding war next time some show up!

Scott, do you think these would work?

NOS Tube Guides

Post by David Root »

Ultra, I have one that I found useful, it is attached. Also there is a wealth of knowledge on tubes and their suitability in different circuits here in this forum, search it.

All of these are in the end just someone's opinion, and we all know what Dirty Harry said about opinions, right?

I think if you read this one and check out the forum, and ask people like Dogears and Tony A. and similarly knowledgeable people around here, you'll find the "right stuff!"

Also, www.audiotubes.com has some fairly useful notes on what he sells.

I appreciate that, thank you very much!
My non-Amp Garage name is Jonas.

I don’t know. What I can tell you is that on two different days the B+ was the same. Last time we measured line for my BM amp it was 121.3V. I suspect it hoovers near there.

Thanks for the PDF, that’ll get me familiarized with some of the tube nomenclature. Fun site too!

Yes a very nice build you should be proud of.

Do you like playing through the amp so far?

The ones you posted are the ones I mention being bad.... Steer clear of the long plate Sylvanias! You want the short plate GE.
