Have both. They compare favorably in the lows & mids. The Delta Pro lacks sparkle in the highs. Not that the EV is "sparkly", but the Delta Pro comparison makes it seem so. If you live on the clean side the Delta Pro with the bright switch on is very pleasing on big clean tones. I have one in a 2 x 12 cab with a CL80 and that combo sounds good to me. In my limited experience with these amps, I have always liked the sound of an EV with a non HRM amp. Favor a G1265 or CL80 for OD HRM tones. I have a couple RWB cones that may never get broken in. While they are a lot of bang for the buck in regards to power handling and getting close to the desired tone - they do not get all the way there. Once you spring for other more expensive choices - you won't look back. As it sits, my RWBs are likely for sale. EV12L, G1265, Delta Pro, and CL80's won't be.

I'll post a quick clip later tonight of the same amp pushing a Delta Pro and a 12L.

Down & dirty: Same amp, mic, guitar, settings, recorder levels, EV in a TL cab, Delta in a 2 x 12 open back. compare the highs - Bigger open back cab seemed to impart mucho more bass in Delta... There is some digital clipping on the 12L clip(likely more efficient in that TL box).

I have both too. My Delta Pro came with my Fuchs ODS SLX100 and a 1x12 cab, it's called a Fuchs FAT S1, but I don't know if it's modified or not. After running it for a while I found it lacked just a little sparkle and dropped an EVM12L into the cab and it has stayed there ever since.

I have found a use for the Delta Pro though, it now resides in my '65 Deluxe Reverb running 6L6's, it's a great speaker in that amp, just perfect for it and I gig that amp all the time.

Rob.

Both clips were: Clean tone, add PAB, add OD(OD + PAB)
Should have had you hear OD alone, I guess. It sounds wonderful on this amp.

Being rather cheap at heart,I tried quite a few speakers. Here's my take on what I tried:
Two greenbacks-nice midrange detail,a little dark, great in pairs, not as good with just one.

Eminence Govnor- very nice clean and distorted tones,a little mid-heavy,colors tone a little too much, but overall nice.

Mojo "Greyhound'- very nice tones, loud, articulate and great overdriven.Highly underated speaker IMHO

EVM12L- trebly, focused but kind of uninspiring to me.Maybe with a 100 watt it would be better? Not liking strat tones with this speaker at all.

Eminence 1218- nicest tone so far IMHO.Loud and nice midrange, nice overdriven. Fat bottom end.Why is this speaker so inexpensive?

Jensen C12N- yuck!

Eminence 100 watt from Twin Reverb- nice except loses definition the harder it's driven

Eminence speaker out of Fender 75- Grainy and vintage sounding.Interesting tone, but loses it at high volumes.

Celestion Neo vintage- nice cleans and distortion but too bright.Loses it with humbuckers, better for marshall tones.

Best overall choice is the Legend, second is the Greyhound.I just couldn't bond with the EV.
Crystal latice or vacuum, that is the question.

Your PAB sound is full and clear.
I get a mid hump in PAB and lose lows, which is good for OD boost but less
satisfying for cleans.
Did you do anything different?

G12/65

Post by makrisp »

I picked up a heritage g/1265 and did not like right out of the box, believe the older broken in originals are way smoother.

After many hours of adjusting the amp (externally), I have finally achieved a very good tone. Should be interesting as the speaker continues to break in.

Definitely not as efficient compared to the EVM, but let's see if it grows on me. I have had the RWB for a while and commented appropriately, and will wait a month to see how this speaker responds over time.

Paul, what cab? The G1265 doesn't sound good in a Thiele port IMO. It only sounds good to me in either an oval ported open back or ceetian closed backs.

Scott,
It is in a 1X12 open back cabinet, I will take a pic and post in about 20 minutes.

Thought I'd just follow this up.

I ended using a jensen blackbird. This is a nice speaker. Not transparent like a EV style it has it's own color. Some where between a Vox Blue and a Jesnen.
It has put the amp into an area that I was chasing something that could hold it's own to a clean Black face and have the chime of a Vox. I was not trying to copy someones sound.

I may try a EV a some point in time.

I will now start to experiment with the cab to hopefully get a little more spread on stage.

Eminence Legend 1218 is my choice also.

I have to agree. I love the 1218. I even bought a vintage 1981 G12-65 on ebay just to make sure I wasn't missing something. I wish I hadn't bothered. I found the 1265 to be smooth but way too bright, in fact almost brittle sounding - I was very surprised and disappointed. It will either go into another amp or back on ebay.

Your 1265 sounds bad Bob. It is 27 years old ya know! They are not brittle at all IMHO and not too bright either.

I have put some hours on the speaker and it is starting to break in properly.

Note: The picking hand technique is critical while playing this speaker. It's going to take me a while as the picking hand needs a re-training.

(Maybe a solid Jazz lesson from Mr. Lerner would help).

Very good so far.
